After releasing, via Twitter, the first photos of the open-top version of the LaFerrari, Ferrari now has rolled out the new model at the Paris auto show and announced its name: Aperta (Italian for “open”). While we the public are invited to gawk in person at the sun-seeking supercar, Ferrari has released a few more details about the car.Ferrari confirmed that the roadster version, which it characterized as a “limited-edition special series,” has the same powertrain as the hardtop. That means a 6.3-liter V-12 supplemented by an electric motor, with a total output of 949 horsepower, although Ferrari added, “The powertrain control software has been optimized to increase its overall efficiency.” Top speed is said to be unchanged and torsional rigidity undiminished. The car comes with both soft and optional, removable carbon-fiber hard tops. The company claims that with the top off and the windows raised, the Aperta has no more aerodynamic drag than the … [Read more...] about Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta: Now You See It
Drive that a Ferrari LaFerrari XX is under development and will be launched in 2015, our spy shooters captured a suspiciously XX-like LaFerrari lapping on the Nurbürgring.Coletta’s statement to attendees of the annual Ferrari Racing Days event—held this year in Sydney, Australia—leaves little ambiguity about what’s next for the Modena-based automaker: “Now we are working on the new hypercar for the circuit, the LaFerrari XX.” For those not in the know, the XX program invites very privileged (and stinkin’ rich) Ferrari customers to purchase essentially a turnkey race car and then gives them low-friction opportunities to race it. The first was the Enzo-based FXX, which was followed by the insane and highly modified 599XX.As for these photos, our shooter on the ground reports that this particular LaFerrari’s speed was so great that he was motivated to hand-time a lap. He says the car completed the circuit in a stunning—and most … [Read more...] about Ferrari LaFerrari XX Confirmed, Is This It Spied at the Nürburgring?
It was first reported that Ferrari might build a LaFerrari Spider in November of 2014, but we haven’t heard anything since. Until now, that is, because a picture surfaced on Facebook Saturday of what very much appears like an event invite to a LaFerrari Spider reveal. The picture features a carbon fiber jewelry box with a Ferrari logo on the front, and an illustration of what looks like a LaFerrari without a roof is on the top. Ferrari, like its permanent rival Lamborghini, has recently taken to producing ultra-limited edition versions of its normal cars. In 2014, the company produced a 10-car run of a drop-top version of the F12berlinetta, sold as the F60 America. The price was set at $2.5 million, and all were sold out before the car was revealed to the public.Structural rigidity–typically a problem for convertibles–wouldn’t be an issue here, since the LaFerrari uses a super-stiff carbon-fiber tub. All in all, it makes a lot of sense for Ferrari to … [Read more...] about More Evidence a LaFerrari Spider Is Coming
In an interview with Automobile, released the very same day he ascended to CEO of now independent Ferrari, Sergio Marchionne—who remains CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles—confirmed what had long been expected: The LaFerrari hypercar will get a convertible variant. Dubbed the LaFerrari Spider, the top-dog Ferrari is already being shopped to customers. The off-the-cuff confirmation came in response to Automobile’s probe for information on potential future Ferrari products, including a Dino-like low-cost Ferrari. Marchionne, ever the master of unexpected product announcements, said only that “the only future product connected to LaFerrari is the Spider. Which is no secret, since potential customers have already been approached.”Ferrari LaFerrari Tested: Yes, It’s Hellaciously Quick11 Things You Have to Know About Ferrari’s Insaniac FXX K HypercarFerrari FXX K: Just Your Everyday 1036-hp Aero-Intensive Track WeaponFinal details, including photos … [Read more...] about Ferrari LaFerrari Spider Confirmed, Won’t Be Called LaFerrari LaSpider
While there has been just one (widely reported) LaFerrari fire since the car’s launch, recent reports insinuate that the automaker has reason to be concerned with its flagship supercar’s fuel tank—Maranello is contacting owners of some early cars to have the fuel tanks upgraded to a new version painted with a non-conductive coating, a running change that was made at some point in production. Is this a recall? Perish the thought—a Ferrari North America spokesperson had this to say: With reference to erroneous information published by some web sites, Ferrari states that no recall has been issued regarding the LaFerrari. Due to a possible incorrect adhesion of a layer of paint on the fuel tank, some clients have been invited to take their cars to an authorized service center to substitute the fuel tank with a new one with new paint. The time to change the fuel tank is relatively short and the intervention concerns only a limited number of … [Read more...] about Certain LaFerrari Owners Invited to Receive a Free, New Fuel Tank
In the market for a Ferrari LaFerrari but put off by the compromises of a street-legal car? According to Top Gear, the Maranello company is building a 1050-hp track-only LaFerrari XX that will launch in Abu Dhabi next month. Fly your private jet down to the UAE and have a gander.Top Gear says company insiders confirm that the even-more-hyper version of Ferrari’s hypercar will get a 100-hp boost over the roadgoing version. The power is gained from tweaking the car’s V-12 engine—the battery-powered half of the hybrid’s drivetrain maintains its stock output at 161 horsepower. As with Ferrari’s other XX-labeled products, this über-LaFerrari is a track-only machine. It has racing tires, aerodynamic enhancements, and a purposeful interior with a proper racing seat and harness. Like the Enzo-based FXX, each LaFerrari XX will live in Maranello even after purchase, looked after by Ferrari’s technical team, and each will be shipped to eight races … [Read more...] about Report: 1050-Horsepower Ferrari LaFerrari XX Coming Next Month

To test the Ferrari LaFerrari, we traveled to Italy to the storied marque’s personal track, Fiorano. Ferrari’s offer was this: We could either test there—or not at all. We chose to test. The Fiorano circuit is nearly two miles long, a thirteen-turn rollercoaster built on what was once Italian farmland. Our usual testing venues, where we gather our zero-to-60-mph times, quarter-mile acceleration, braking figures, and grip numbers are nothing like racetracks. Putting a car through our battery of tests calls for a long, flat straight, usually one more than a mile in length, as well as a 300-foot skidpad to assess lateral acceleration. But even when we test at our locations, Ferrari doesn’t just let us jump into its cars and test them. An engineer watches the proceedings and provides an often-valuable briefing on the subsystems of the car, and mechanics are there to swap out tires if necessary. When asked why all the bother, Ferrari says it wants the … [Read more...] about Ferrari LaFerrari Tested: Yes, It’s Hellaciously Quick
The wraps are finally off the LaFerrari. The Prancing Horse’s eagerly-anticipated limited-series special, of which just 499 will be built, made its world debut today at the Geneva International Motor Show. “We chose to call this model LaFerrari,” declared Ferrari’s President, Luca di Montezemolo, “because it is the maximum expression of what defines our company – excellence. Excellence in terms of technological innovation, performance, visionary styling and the sheer thrill of driving. Aimed at our collectors, this is a truly extraordinary car which encompasses advanced solutions that, in the future, will find their way onto the rest of the range, and it represents the benchmark for the entire automotive industry. Sergio Marchionne added another CEO title to his résumé yesterday, taking control of Ferrari, where the Fiat-Chrysler head already served as chairman. He replaces former CEO Amedeo Felisa, who retired after 26 years with the company. Felisa remains on the independent automaker’s board of directors, where he will serve as a technical advisor.Marchionne now has full control of the company he spun off from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles at the beginning of the year. Two years ago, he succeeded former chairman Luca di Montezemolo, who stepped down in protest of Marchionne’s plans for the brand’s future. Those profitability plans are twofold, and include an expansion of the brand’s presence in non-automotive luxury goods, a direction started by di Montezemolo. Last year, the automaker said it would increase annual vehicle production to 9,000 units by 2019.The news of Marchionne’s appointment comes as the company announced a record … [Read more...] about Sergio Takes the Helm at Ferrari; Confirms Record Profits and a LaFerrari Spider
