What’s the best way to be seen? Be best friends with a star of course. There’s no bigger star than Mercedes in Formula One these days – the team has won the last three constructors’ championships after ending Red Bull’s dominance, and a driver from the team has took home the driver’s championship in the same hybrid era too. Malaysia’s oil and gas company Petronas is the title sponsor of the team and the most prominent brand on the F1 W08 as well as Lewis Hamilton’s attire, but there have been rumours that Petronas would not be renewing the sponsorship deal and even of Mercedes quitting F1. Those rumours have now been put to rest, as it has been revealed that Petronas has signed a multi-year extension to its title sponsorship of the F1 champions. This was revealed at the weekend of the British GP, which local favourite Hamilton won. Apparently, the deal was signed at the end of 2016 but was kept under wraps by both Mercedes and Petronas. … [Read more...] about Petronas sponsorship of Mercedes F1 team extended

Mercedes-Benz’ performance division AMG recently sold its 25 percent stake in Italian super bike maker, MV Agusta. Mercedes-AMG had acquired the 25 percent stake in MV Agusta back in 2014 for around 30 million euros (Rs. 226 crores). Reports suggest that Mercedes-AMG had purchased that stake in MV Agusta as an answer to Ducati’s purchase by Audi. MV Agusta has confirmed that AMG’s 25 percent stake has been bought by ComSar Invest which is owned by a Russian oil and gas tycoon, Timur Sardarov. The Russian company is aiming to increase the presence of MV Agusta in various markets through continued investment in the brand’s sales and service networks, technology and marketing fields. The financial side of this acquisition is unknown yet, but we believe ComSar Invest must have paid at least 30 million euros to Mercedes-AMG. Meanwhile, Giovanni Castiglioni, the current owner of MV Agusta will maintain a controlling interest in the company. MV Agusta as a brand is … [Read more...] about Mercedes Sells Its 25% Stake In MV Agusta
Unexpected fires rank among the topmost fears of any automaker, and Mercedes-Benz is dealing with plenty of them. After reports of 51 fires in late-model vehicles, 30 of them in the U.S., the German luxury automaker will recall roughly one million vehicles worldwide to prevent an electrical fault from causing even more. The issue afflicts a number of different models and stems from a starting current limiter that can become overloaded during the starting procedure. No injuries have been reported from the fires, and the automaker has already installed a fix on new models coming off the production line. However, Reuters reports that Mercedes-Benz has placed a stop-sale order on all unsold vehicles left on dealer lots. Those vehicles won’t budge until fixed.According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the models include 2015-2017 C-Class vehicles, CLA models from the same time period, 2017 E-Class and GLA models, and 2016-2017 GLC vehicles. The NHTSA recall … [Read more...] about After Dozens of Fires, Mercedes-Benz Recalls One Million Vehicles
Mercedes-Benz’s AMG sub-brand might run out of sensible products to turn into rip-snorting powerwagons before too long.Once again, the compact GLC SUV lineup has gone under the knife, emerging from the German operating room with an even darker persona and plenty of new inches where it counts. Cubic inches, of course. For the growing family with a small garage and an urgent desire to reach 60 miles per hour in less than four seconds, your chariot has arrived.Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce the GLC63 line at the New York International Show, though it dished out details today. For 2018, the GLC lineup — SUV, infuriatingly named Coupe, and the curvy four-door’s S variant — gains a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, an AMG prefix and 63 suffix. That, and plenty of gear designed to keep these rigs out of the rhubarb.Keep in mind that the automaker already offers a Mercedes-AMG GLC43 with a biturbo V6 making 362 hp. Not nearly enough, said Benz. After this … [Read more...] about 2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC63: A Twin-Turbo V8 for the Compact SUV Crowd
At new car dealerships, coupes are thin on the ground. The demise of the Honda Accord coupe at the end of the 2017 model year shutters the mainstream midsize coupe segment, a category long since diminished by the disappearance of two-door Camrys, Altimas, and the Avengers.Compact coupes are rare, too. You won’t find two-door versions of the Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Sentra, Subaru Impreza, Toyota Corolla, or Volkswagen Jetta, although their predecessors all offered coupe variants.Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Chrysler Cordoba, Ford Thunderbird? Long gone. But coupes — genuine two-doors such as the pillarless Mercedes-Benz E400 4Matic I’m driving (and being massaged by) this week, or the Honda Civic, or the Infiniti Q60, or the Rolls-Royce Wraith — are still available.Would you buy one?Probably not. More likely than not, your next new vehicle purchase will involve a light truck, anything from the Ford F-150 to the Toyota Highlander to the … [Read more...] about QOTD: It’s 2017 – Would You Buy a Coupe?
Daimler has fired back after Telsa CEO Elon Musk returned to Twitter to speak his mind on the company’s decision to drop $1 billion into its Alabama plant. The investment is intended to aid production of a forthcoming electric SUV but, earlier this week, Musk said that wasn’t “a lot of money for a giant like Daimler/Mercedes. Wish they’d do more. Off by a zero.”The following day, the Daimler responded over social media, suggesting Musk was “absolutely right” and pointed out that it’s actually investing over $10 billion, with only the first billion going into the assembly plant.Whether you’re interested in electric vehicles or not, you have to admit these inter-automotive squabbles make the entire happening a lot more interesting. While cars themselves can be exciting, the corporate environment that facilitates their production is usually much less so. There’s also a chance that this type … [Read more...] about Online Ribbing Between Automakers Bolsters the Competitive Spirit We Like
Call it the Americanization of Mercedes-Benz. While the German automaker has assembled C-Class, GLE and GLS models in Alabama for some time (and, more recently, Sprinters in South Carolina), recent pressure from the Trump administration has led the automaker to reconsider what goes into those vehicles. After being characterized by President Trump as “very bad,” it’s possible other German automakers operating in the U.S. could follow Mercedes’ lead in a bid to avoid further heat.According to The Wall Street Journal, Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler AG has announced it will source more parts from U.S. suppliers. The automaker recently told suppliers it “sees value” in securing components from areas closer to its Tuscaloosa assembly plant. For Mercedes, the timing of the move implies it has more to do with politics than logistics or cost. Trump claims a $15.4 billion automotive trade deficit exists between the two countries, lumping Mercedes-Benz … [Read more...] about U.S.-Built Mercedes-Benz Models to Become More American
Vehicle classifications are important. They enable governments to better regulate. They allow uninformed buyers to get a grip on the market. They foster competition. They clarify conversation. The passenger car sector is subdivided in countless ways, and not just by size. In the car realm, there are hatchbacks and liftbacks, convertibles and roadsters, station wagons and shooting brakes, sedans and coupes.Yet when it comes to utility vehicles, besides differentiating (or attempting to differentiate, if there’s even any point) between SUVs and crossovers, much of the classification conversation revolves purely around size, from the subcompact Honda HR-V to the full-size Chevrolet Suburban. So what’s this? I’m driving a Mercedes-AMG GLC43 4Matic Coupe this week. But we all know it’s not a coupe, which is traditionally known as a car with two doors and a fixed roof. Sometimes the coupe’s definition is even narrower. Yet never has the traditional coupe … [Read more...] about QOTD: What Do We Call SUV Coupes If They’re Not Coupes?
Set to arrive in Germany in November 2017 and other global markets — but not the United States — in early 2018, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class is, according to Mercedes-Benz, “the first pickup from a premium manufacturer.”Lincoln Blackwood? Cadillac Escalade EXT? Lincoln Mark LT? You apparently don’t count. We’ve seen the concepts before. Mercedes-Benz today revealed the production X-Class, a Nissan Navara-based pickup truck from the three-pointed star.Marketed in Pure, Progressive, and Power trim lines, the X-Class will initially be available with two diesel powerplants generating 163 and 190 horsepower as well as a 165-horsepower gas-powered engine. Mercedes-Benz says the range-topping X-Class will feature a V6 diesel with 258 horsepower.Though related to the Navara, the X-Class is both wider and longer, making the Benz a particularly large pickup in many of the markets in which it will compete. At 211.8 inches long, the X-Class is 20 … [Read more...] about Production 2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class Pickup Truck Revealed, Priced From €37,294
