Revolution is a fundamental change and it can not be denied by the human generation. As in the last few decades the whole world is redefined by the advancement of technology as computers are converted into tablets, traditional land lines into smart phones and so on. Now this revolution has come to the Indian automobile industry where hatchbacks are being stretched while the SUV’s are compressed and contrived into a smart segment called compact SUVs. The current best offering in the segment is the Renault Duster, however the most awaited car of the year, the Ford EcoSport is very close to launch which is expected to be a game changer and glimmered as a Duster’s nemesis. The proportion of four-wheeler vehicles on Indian roads is currently highly dynamic. Gone are those days when the sub-continent population used to use a handful of models. The perished Ambassador and Premier had to give way to hatchbacks from Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors; the two supremos had quite a good run. The scenario had rapidly changed since the introduction of international carmakers in early 2000’s which was coupled with the change in demands of customers. Now the roads are ruled by Sports Utility Vehicles, compact SUV’s; and that the Crossover Utility Vehicles trend has kicked off in the market needs no introduction. These crossovers have been based on popular sedan or hatchback models therefore are based on the same platform with relative similar features. While compact SUVs are doing well in the showroom, their success comes at the expense of midsize and compact car sales. In a report from Edmunds, 63 percent of compact SUV owners traded a midsize SUV, compact car or midsize sedan for a compact SUV like the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape and Nissan Rogue. Fourteen percent, meanwhile, traded like for like.Either way, both groups have their reasons for choosing models from this segment: Compact SUV popularity is truly a product story. They are a desirable size, but concede very little in efficiency and are comparably priced with models in other popular segments. They combine aspects of the market’s best-selling and pragmatic segments — establishing a new middle. The report says that transaction prices for compact SUVs are on par with midsize sedans, averaging $26,420 compared to the latter’s $25,887 average. It adds that the popular segment is having an effect on dealer inventories as well, as midsize and compact cars take … [Read more...] about Compact SUVs Gain Popularity At Expense Of Midsize, Compact Cars
