Assembling the ‘best’ cars on sale, then. This, on a website where opinion is not in short supply, is obviously as far from a breeze as you’d think it would be. It works like this: an Autocar writer distributes a list of what he is absolutely sure are the best 50 cars on sale; the 50 cars that must be on the list. It is approximately 68 cars long. He asks for feedback, and it is widely given, and so the ‘best 50 cars on sale’ list gains another 10 cars and then loses a few through immediate howled derision. And so begins a short series of exchanges and revisions until we have something we mostly agree on, based on our extensive testing experience, objective measurement and analysis, and, naturally, blind prejudice – because sometimes only the latter will do. But then a curious thing happens, from around 15th position up to the top. From that point, there is less argument, more consensus. And when placings for the top 10 are being decided, and when … [Read more...] about The 50 best new cars of 2017: 50-6
Ford Motor Co shocked the Detroit Motor Show by unveiling a successor to its GT supercar. The model will start production late next year, and will be sold in global markets, which is expected to include Europe. Two days after it was unveiled, it has been announced that the smashing-looking car has bagged the EyesOn Design Award for best production vehicle. EyesOn Design, the official design awards for NAIAS, honours the best production and concept vehicles making global debuts in Detroit. Judges include current and former design leaders from global automakers and transportation departments at top art schools. "Ford and its employees are honored to receive this recognition," said Moray Callum, Ford Motor Company vice-president, Design. The GT's cutting-edge technology and engineering demonstrate Ford's commitment to performance and … [Read more...] about Ford GT bags design award for best production vehicle at 2015 Detroit Motor Show
The Japanese are known for making the best in-line four engines. The Europeans (mostly Italians) strive hard to make V-Twin and V4 engines better and better. Then there is Triumph, they have unparalleled knowledge and skill in making parallel three-cylinder engines (sorry for the rhyming, it was necessary). Coming to parallel twin engines, those too are best shaped by the Japanese. Markets are changing. Yamaha has made an in-line triple and twin and Europeans have started making in-line fours too. Yet again, Japanese made single-cylinder engines and it’s been more than 20 years since the making. The crummy air-cooled, 2-valve engines ranging from 99cc to 150cc, when it comes to Indian prospect. Let’s consider the fact that we are all enthusiasts here and we look for something exciting and with character, despite the character may end up good or bad, we need something to thrill us. When Bajaj Auto came in the market with motorcycles, the very first engine was the … [Read more...] about Is Bajaj Best Single-Cylinder Motorcycle Manufacturer
8 of the current F1 teams that make up the Formula One Teams Association have announced that they (with the exception of FOTA members Williams and Force India) will leave F1 at the end of the current season. These 8 teams are: BMW Sauber, Brawn, Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Renault, Toro Rosso, and Toyota. Continue reading after the jump for the full story. The following are their statement: Since the formation of FOTA last September the teams have worked together and sought to engage the FIA and commercial rights holder (Formula One Management, lead by Bernie Ecclestone), to develop and improve the sport. Unprecedented worldwide financial turmoil has inevitably placed great challenges before the F1 community. FOTA is proud that it has achieved the most substantial measures to reduce costs in the history of our sport. In particular the manufacturer teams have provided assistance to the independent teams, a number of which would probably not be in the sport today without the FOTA … [Read more...] about 8 FOTA members announce new breakaway race series, RIP Formula 1?
It’s very encouraging to us at Circle Track when someone gets the initiative (and bravery) to create a new series in the world of short track racing. While many of the series that pop up are geared toward the “top-tier” classes (i.e. Late Models, Modifieds, etc.), there is always room for other divisions to organize and bring a show. Enter the newly formed Midwest Street Stock Series and creators Greg Osman and Tony Hubert. Based off common Street Stock rules utilized by UMP tracks in the Midwest, Osman and Hubert created the seven-race series in order to give some “entry-level” division drivers a chance to shine. We went one-on-one with Osman to describe the Midwest Street Stock Series. Be sure to find more information including their schedule and web site below. Circle Track: What brought you to start the Midwest Street Stock Series? Greg Osman: Both of us (Greg Osman and Tony Hubert) promote memorial races in memory of family members. Ford struck gold by bringing the Mustang to the UK. It’s competitively priced, has sharp looks and with hardly any rivals offering something similar, it’s easy to see why there’s a 12-month waiting list for cars coming here. We’ve already tried the 2.3-litre EcoBoost Convertible and were quite impressed, but now it’s the turn of the V8 model to strut its stuff. Just like the EcoBoost, this car has a two-stage roof, with a manual grab handle that unlatches the canvas hood from the windscreen header rail, then a button retracts the top electrically. The whole process takes 10.5 seconds, which is the fastest folding of the six cars tested here, while closing the roof takes 12.2 seconds – second only to the Porsche Boxster. You can operate the roof while moving, too, but it only works at a maximum speed of 3mph, which hardly makes it seem worthwhile. When the roof is down, you get some buffeting, but it’s not much worse than in the Mercedes S … [Read more...] about New convertible cars 2016: Ford Mustang
Choosing the specification of a modern car is a potentially baffling process that’s been made a lot simpler by the advent of online car configurators. These invaluable tools can also be great fun, if you feel like really cutting loose and configuring a fully-loaded car with a wallet-crushing price tag. Here we’ve done exactly that for some of the UK’s most popular cars and revealed just how expensive these models can get if you throw caution to the wind with the options list in hand. It’s sobering stuff that really highlights what a few choice car options can soon do to inflate that tempting list price out of all recognition. • Best new cars 2016 This is, of course, just a bit of fun; paying £38,000 for a MINI Clubman or £53,000 for a Volkswagen Passat Estate is a silly move if you have any regard for your car’s future depreciation figure. The trick is always to hit the specification sweet spot by creating the car that’s going to … [Read more...] about Car configurator overkill: how not to spec your new car

If you need a little more versatility and flexibility than you might get from a sedan, yet you don't want to make the leap to utility vehicles and you don't want to give up fuel economy or driving enjoyment, then a hatchback might be your perfect match. Of course, the term hatchback is potentially confusing, and open to interpretation. Here at The Car Connection, we use it to categorize models that have a 'two-box' design (hood and passenger cell), along with an abbreviated roofline that yields to a sloped, wide-opening hatch. Quite a few hatchbacks do have sedan counterparts, but it's not a requisite. Which new hatchback should you buy? We're here with some help help. Finding your way to the best new hatchback can be as time-consuming as studying a few of those important factors and letting them lead you through the process. Or you can take our shortcut. BMW has lifted the lid on its new 4 Series range for 2017. The new cars have been treated to a minor facelift, plus new cabin technology, new styling options, and M Performance styling packs. Styling tweaks are kept to a minimum, but the new models usher in new headlamp technology with hexagonal full-LED headlamps inspired by the units found on the new 5 Series. Bi-LED headlamps come as standard - they form part of a very slightly refreshed nose. Full LED taillights also feature as part of the package, with a new horizontal lighting signature alongside a new rear apron. • Best sports cars to buy now Four new 18-inch and 19-inch alloy wheel designs are now available, as well as two new paint hues – Snapper Rocks Blue, a new shade of turquoise, plus Sunset Orange. Perhaps the most exciting thing we do here at Auto Express is road-testing. We get to go out in the hottest new cars long before they go on sale to the general public, drive them around and give our thoughts on what they're like. 2016 was a great year for road testing, too, and featured some of the most eagerly anticipated cars in years. We drove everything from humdrum hatchbacks to spectacular supercars - cars to buy with the head, and cars to buy with the heart. 2016 also marked yet another 'year of the SUV', with more and more manufacturers producing these jacked-up family favourites for us to test. Cars like the Jaguar F-Pace and Audi Q5 were just some of the scores of SUVs we drove this year. Many manufacturers really pushed the performance envelope, too. It seems we were just getting dewy-eyed about the 306bhp Honda Civic Type R when Ford came along with the blistering Focus RS, while even Alfa Romeo got in on the powerful action with its 503bhp Giulia Quadrifoglio, a BMW … [Read more...] about Best new cars 2016: our road tests of the year
Our spy photographers have caught the facelifted BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe testing ahead of its reveal later this year. Subtle changes have been made to the front and rear bumpers as well as differences with the lights both front and back. The tweaks will reflect those made to the BMW 3 Series last year. The camouflage used on the test car means that few of the changed details can be guaranteed, but the lack of cladding to the bodywork suggests that the corrections will be subtle. At the front we can spot reshaped air intakes, while the updated headlights mirror those on the new 3 Series. From behind the facelifted 4 Series Gran Coupe’s bumper has been slightly revised, while fresh light clusters are also likely to feature. The new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is expected to be revealed later this year, with the first cars arriving in showrooms during the first half of 2017. It’ll rival all-new Audi A5 Sportback, which is set to follow quickly in the footsteps of the recently … [Read more...] about New BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe facelift spied testing
Once again, car fans across Europe have cast their votes to choose the best new models launched in the past year. The Golden Steering Wheel is one of the most prestigious car competitions in the world – and this year produced a vintage crop of contenders. Readers of Auto Express and its sister titles all gave their verdict, and once a shortlist had been whittled down, our team of expert testers joined journalists from France, Italy and Germany to choose the winners. With more new models than ever before this year, the contest was closely fought, but now we can reveal the cars that came out on top after our rigorous testing. For each winner, we’ve also chosen our pick of the range – the version that best embodies the abilities which helped the car scoop the award. And our team provides some insight about why this particular model is so good. There was more consensus between Auto Express readers and their counterparts in Europe over the winners this year than in 2012, … [Read more...] about Best cars 2013: Golden Steering Wheel award winners
Drivers wanting some of the most expensive and ostentatious two-door coupés money can buy have often flocked to Mercedes. Its S-Class Coupé, launched last year, isn’t just the latest in a long line of vast and showy four-seater two-doors, but it also offers some seriously cutting-edge technology, putting it up against more exotic names in the business like Bentley. Yet while the S-Class has the panache to tempt the super-rich to open their cheque books, those further down the pecking order have to look elsewhere. Step up the new C-Class Coupé, which aims to offer a taste of the £100,000 S-Class Coupé in a far more reasonably priced package. It even looks like a scaled-down version of its big brother. The new two-door C-Class moves away from the previous generation’s approach to a small coupé. While the old car looked a little too much like a two-door version of the C-Class saloon, the new one is very much a separate entity. Largely … [Read more...] about New Mercedes C-Class Coupe 2015 review
Icon. It’s an overused term in the automotive lexicon. Really, there are only a handful of vehicles that warrant such praise – and the Land Rover Defender and its ancestors are among the worthy few. This all-purpose 4x4 originally designed for post-war farmers has gone on to become a symbol of British ingenuity, engineering and craftsmanship – and even the British psyche. It sums up all that’s great about our small yet rather significant island, and in some ways, the vehicle’s shortcomings, and the problems that blighted its production, also echo what’s not so great about Britain. • Land Rover Defender tour: witness the last days of an icon But love it or hate it, you can’t deny that the silhouette of a Defender is as recognisable across the world as those other most notable motoring icons, the VW Beetle and original Mini. Arguably, however, it surpasses even these because, now in its 67th year, the Series Land Rover and Defender have been … [Read more...] about Land Rover Defender: still the best at 60?
Sure, we get excited about muscle cars with a lot of horsepower, cars that hug corners, and those that boast sensuous styling. But what really matters to us at the end of a day is just how comfortable a vehicle's interior is. What makes an interior special isn't just that it boasts comfortable seats or good utilization of available space, it's that it can make even an ordinary car, truck, SUV, or crossover feel genuinely special. That's easy enough to do at the upper end, where the extra cost of wrapping some trim in real leather or exotic wood is easy enough to absorb with a high sticker price. We've also been impressed with the attention to detail found in some less pricey vehicles; in our ratings system, several vehicles that merit an 8 out of 10 or higher can be found for well under the average price of a new car today, which recently topped $34,000. MORE: Here's how we rate cars To earn points on our scale, cars need to provide good comfort for the number of seat belts allotted, … [Read more...] about The best new car interiors of 2017
