Today I begin a long-term series that will look at and analyse the cars present in each city I passed. Each time I took the train or bus I moved between 800 and 1000 km so it’s really like finding oneself in a different country altogether, even though I stayed in Russia for the first two weeks of my trip. I’m not sure yet how many parts there will be in this series as I haven’t finished the trip yet! I hope you’ll enjoy the reports as much as I did creating them.Russia, Mongolia and China not your thing? That’s fine, you can check out 174 other car markets on my blog.Back to the Trans-Siberian. Your favorite worldwide updates are back and today the focus is on China. It’s no secret that apart from in the Light Commercial Vehicle segment, Chinese brands have been struggling in their home market for a while (see China February 2012: When will Chinese cars rule at home?). Granted, last November in the midst of China-Japan tensions, the penetration rate of Chinese passenger cars shot up to 35%, its highest in 20 years. But it’s still incredibly low compared to Japan and South Korea, two Asian car manufacturing powerhouses that have built their success overseas on a quasi-monopoly at home. But this could change drastically soon. How?Jump and see… The ChangAn Eado’s potential lies in export markets and the Chinese Far WestFrench car website autoactu.com claims the Chinese woes at home may be about to ease a little. But first let’s backtrack a few years. After studying how Chinese brands may finally find their mojo at home and before I hit you with a few impressive sales figures for April let’s take a bit of time for our much anticipated World Roundup for March. This month the worldwide star is the Nissan Qashqai…Alright so France is under the spotlight this month, not so much for the market’s performance, struggling as much as the rest of Europe, but for two historical events: in the Light Commercial Vehicle ranking, not usually the subject of much talk in my monthly roundups, an import takes the lead for the first time ever: the Fiat Ducato is #1 with 2,777 sales and 8.4% share. In the Passenger Cars ranking, the Nissan Qashqai is only the 2nd Japanese model to manage to ever crack the monthly French Top 10 at #9 with 3,381 sales and 2% share. The only other one is the Toyota Yaris which did so in January and March 2007. Fiat DucatoSo yes, the Qashqai is once again the star of the month, and is … [Read more...] about Best Selling Cars Around The Globe: World March 2013 Roundup

Today we inaugurate a 5 Part series about how Chinese carmakers are setting themselves up for success abroad. Each day of this week I will publish a new Part for the series. I hope you enjoy it!For the first time in the history of car manufacturing, Chinese carmakers have sold 1 million cars outside of China in 2012. They are now relying more and more on export markets to boost their bottom-line, especially as conditions have worsened for local passenger cars at home over the last couple of years. However, as I described in my article “China: How local brands may finally find their mojo at home“, the Chinese are learning how to sell low-cost overseas and apply these strategies at home, making themselves more competitive in the process. In fact, while the long-dreaded Chinese ‘invasion’ of the West European and American car markets is still a long way off, Chinese manufacturers have been working extra-hard under the radar to secure less developed markets that … [Read more...] about Best Selling Cars Around The Globe: How The Chinese Are Setting Themselves Up For Success (Part 1: Africa)
