As we breathed a sigh of relief at finishing our ’64 Malibu project car known around here as Malitude, we thought, wouldn’t it be fun to build something that a lot more people could duplicate without a second mortgage on the home? One of the controlling factors with Mark Stielow’s twin-turbo Malibu was to keep it within reach of the seasoned home builder, but on the ragged edge of affordable. That made it a lot more accessible than, say, a $250,000 show car from Troy Trepanier, but with a build cost well over $50,000 (not including Mark’s own substantial labor) it still is a stretch for most folks. While work on the Malibu was finishing up, a few more things came into focus. The first factor was the catastrophic elimination of California’s rolling smog exemption for cars 30 years old and older. The second thing was my desire to build my first ever g-Machine from vintage sheetmetal. I figured there are a lot of people out there either attempting their first … [Read more...] about 1976 Chevrolet Camaro – Project g/28
TTAC Commentator and sometime author Niky Tamayo gives us insight into New GM’s new Carmaro’s tranny probs, thanks to this technical bulletin (first published on Camaro5.com). And here I was giving people crap for complaining about weak Camaro gearboxes suggesting, in all likelihood, hoonery was the cause of failure. But when GM itself cites the torque handling capabilities of the Camaro transmission as being a gnat’s hair higher than the engine’s peak torque. Then you can’t help but wonder how many more will blow before the uprate the transmission. While GM is in no way obligated to build indestructible transmissions for street cars that it has to warranty, you’d think they’d either allow themselves a little more leeway in transmission strength, given the fact that anyone buying a V8 Camaro isn’t likely to NOT hoon the hell out of it, or program the traction control or launch control to limit torque on hard launches . . . … [Read more...] about Chevrolet Camaro Gearbox Failures Explained?
It’s a question that goes back some 50 years.Nixon or Humphrey. No, wait. Camaro or Mustang.Forget your Camry vs. Accord monotony, your F-150 vs. Silverado one-upmanship, and the Smart Fortwo vs. Scion iQ debate that routinely breaks the internet. This, this is the American automotive debate of the decade. And the decade before. And the decade before that. It’s as though Ali and Frazier just kept on fighting. Annually. For decades. It’s the Yankees and Mets meeting in the World Series every year. It’s like — and I know you don’t want me to go there — Trump vs. Hillary in 2020, 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036…If you could have just the one, which would it be? Ford Mustang or Chevrolet Camaro?Go back in time if you must, but the battle of which we speak is a current one. Both cars are now firmly entrenched in their sixth generations. The Mustang never departed, of course. But the Camaro, after dropping out of production in 2002, … [Read more...] about QOTD: Do You Want a Ford Mustang or a Chevrolet Camaro?
Automotive crossbreeds don’t always turn out for the better. GM’s past is littered with parts-bin-assembled cars that should never have existed. The result is something of an automotive unicorn. Under the hood lies a 6.2-liter small-block V8, yet the Camaro tips the scales at a svelte 3,685 pounds and boasts BMW-like weight balance.Let’s be … [Read more...] about 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS Review – The Cadillac/Corvette Crossbreed
On the Muscle Car Calendar, 2016 was supposed to be the Year of Camaro. After outselling the Ford Mustang in the United States in five consecutive years between 2010 and 2014, it wasn’t surprising to see the Chevrolet Camaro fade into a distant second place in calendar year 2015. The Mustang was all-new in sixth-generation form for model year 2015; the Camaro was in its seventh and last year of its fifth iteration. The refreshed Dodge Challenger’s success may have played a role in the Camaro’s sharp decline, too, as 2015 was the seventh consecutive year of U.S. Challenger sales growth.2016, with the reborn Camaro freshly reengineered and the Mustang no longer the freshest American muscle, is not turning out to be the Camaro’s time to shine.Through the first five months of 2016, the Ford Mustang has outsold the Chevrolet Camaro by 21,324 units in the United States, a margin that may be impossible for the Camaro to overcome by year’s end. There … [Read more...] about Ford Mustang vs. Chevrolet Camaro: 2016 Is Clearly Not The New Camaro’s Year
“Do you want to get in and out of your car easily and do you want to be able to back out of a tight parking spot?” Ford Mustang buyer and former Chevrolet Camaro shopper John Oglesby wrote to Car And Driver for its September 2016 issue. “If so, you need the Mustang.”John Oglesby is truly representative of the market as a whole. After holding its position as the top dog in the segment for five years, the Chevrolet Camaro predictably lost its title to the Ford Mustang in 2015, the year of an all-new Mustang; the last year for the now-departed fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro.2016 hosted the launch of an all-new Chevrolet Camaro, but a return to sales leadership wasn’t in the cards. Not at any point since the nameplate’s 2009 return has the Camaro sold so poorly. Year-over-year, U.S. Camaro volume is down 15 percent compared with 2015, the Camaro’s previous worst year since returning.Poor visibility, a premium price point, and styling that … [Read more...] about With Chevrolet Camaro Sales Plunging, Camaro Inventory Has Ballooned To A 129-Day Supply

A starring role and skyrocketing sales couldn’t dim its usual criticism shortly thereafter. Fully four years into that model, good feelings waned; its overweight chassis and zest for precious, expensive gasoline overshadowed most of its good attributes.Even our sixth-generation tester — which we picked up in Bozeman, Montana on a dreary November morning in between snowstorms and set under overcast skies — didn’t entirely … [Read more...] about 2016 Chevrolet Camaro First Drive – Hostile and Hospitable
The narrow victory scored by the Chevrolet Camaro in America’s pony car sales race in September 2016 was the result of General Motors finally pricing the Camaro in line with the Ford Mustang. But General Motors still has more than four months of Camaro supply as dealers approach a much slower buying season for sports cars in general; as the auto industry at large shows signs of a gradual and modest slowdown.Year-over-year, U.S. sales of the Chevrolet Camaro jumped 25 percent in September 2016. Compared with August, month-to-month volume rose 17 percent. To produce such gains, GM had to triple the average price cut on Camaros. Heading into September, Automotive News said General Motors had a 139-day supply of Camaros, or roughly 30,000 units. One month later, Cars.com shows that GM still has 30,000 Camaros in stock, as the 6,577 sales reported were apparently replaced by approximately 6,500 more Camaros. The market has 1.4 million cars in inventory, which equals 61 … [Read more...] about GM Tripled Chevrolet Camaro Incentives In September, Made Small Dent In Bulging Inventory
Updated with additional October incentive numbers. In theory, 2016 should have been the Chevrolet Camaro’s year. Although it’s not over, we already know it won’t be the Camaro’s year. But the Chevrolet Camaro is making headway as 2016 comes to a close. October was the second consecutive month in which the Camaro outsold the Mustang. The Chevrolet Camaro was America’s preeminent sports coupe for five years between 2010 and 2014. After the sixth-generation Ford Mustang launched to critical acclaim, marketplace success, and claimed sales leadership, the sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro arrived to take back its crown in 2016.Through the first-half of 2016, U.S. sales of the Chevrolet Camaro were down 14 percent compared with the same period one year earlier, when the Bowtie muscle coupe was halfway through its worst year since the nameplate returned in 2009.Between January and June of this year, with the latest Mustang’s hype quotient diminished … [Read more...] about Is It A Trend?
