One of the most common questions I get asked as a car dealer and auto auctioneer is, "When is the best time to buy a new car?" The answer is usually the time period between Labor Day and the middle of November. That's because this is when new car dealers and the manufacturers are trying to get rid of their current-model-year vehicles to make way for a small army of 2016 models. Rebates, incentives, cheap financing, and overstocks of unpopular models all help create the liquidity needed to turn the old inventory into a new set of wheels for the buying public – often at a very reduced price. But sometimes the "old" new car isn't a better pick than the "new" new car. It depends on a lot of factors, including the car in question and the differences from one model year to the next. I recently received an email from Jeff, who is interested in the Mazda CX-9 and asks whether he should buy a 2015 model or wait for the new version that will debut soon in LA. I'll use his as the example … [Read more...] about Should you buy a leftover 2015 or a brand new 2016 model?

GM sent a memo to Chevrolet and GMC dealerships nationwide informing them of changes to the powertrain warranties on all new 2016 models. Currently, the powertrain warranty coverage for 2015 models comes in at 5 years/100,000 miles. But warranties for 2016 Chevrolet and GMC models will be lowered to 5 years/60,000 miles. The changes will take effect as soon as 2016 models begin hitting showroom floors this summer. The cut follows the revised coverage made to both Buick and Cadillac back in 2013 which dropped the coverage from 100,000 miles to 70,000 miles.Base MSRPMPGPowertrain WarrantyFree Maintenance2015 Chevrolet Cruze$16,99526/365 Year/100,0002 Years/24,000 Miles2016 Chevrolet CruzeN/AN/A5 Year/60,0001 Year/12,000 Miles2015 Toyota Corolla$17,77528/375 Year/60,0002 Years/25,000 Miles2015 Honda Civic$19,31028/365 Year/60,000Not Offered2015 Ford Focus$17,99526/365 Year/60,000Not Offered An ExampleTake the 2015 Chevrolet Cruze. After the massive Takata and GM ignition switch recalls, safety is at the top of the minds of both manufacturers and consumers. The most recent recall was Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles' (FCA) heavily-publicized software recall/update. The trio of recent recalls set the table for today's news: the world's newly re-crowned No. 1 automaker, Volkswagen, will roll out a plethora of new active safety features to their entire 2016 model lineup. As it stands today, only the $42k+ 2015 Volkswagen Touareg offers the upcoming safety suite.Safety UpgradesFor 2016, the everyman will have the opportunity to outfit their Jetta, Passat or Golf with safety features like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and automatic braking--the latter of which will bring models like the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta down to a stop from up to 18.6 mph to prevent an accident. Volkswagen will offer the features in all of their models. The features will be bundled together and cost between $695 and $1,495. The price is … [Read more...] about Volkswagen Bolsters 2016 Model Lineup With Safety, Tech and Value
Car safety is on the top of everyone's mind, and rightfully so. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), 32,719 people died in auto accidents in 2013. The number is alarming, and both manufacturers and the driving public are taking notice. The number, though large, represents a 22% drop compared to the death toll just ten years prior (2003). One reason can be attributed to improved car safety.Volkswagen Adapts, Evolves, ImprovesWhich brings us to news that the IIHS awarded four of Volkswagen's most popular models with their highest accolade, the coveted IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus safety rating. The move represents Volkswagen's continued efforts to improve safety across the board, including high-volume models which are popular amongst car buyers. In the past, the updated features were only available on the brand's $45k+ Touareg SUV.2016 Volkswagen ModelsThe Top Safety Pick Plus accolade that only a handful of vehicles receive. Following GM's footsteps, Fiat-Chrysler Automotive (FCA) will reduce its 5-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty for all 2016 Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and RAM Truck vehicles. The new powertrain warranty coverage will still come in at the same 5-year duration, but the mileage limit will now be limited to 60,000 miles--a substantial 40,000-mile cut. Why The Change? The change was made because FCA feels that it needs to better align itself with competitors which have adopted a similar "strategy". A trio of brands including Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac all saw their mileage limits reduced substantially earlier this year.During the height of the recession in 2009, FCA announced the big mileage warranty to help assuage the fears that prospective car shoppers might have had when comparing cars, namely from Hyundai and Kia.Both the Korean brands now stand alone in terms of having the best warranties at 10 years/100,000 miles. What It Means For YouThe hit in mileage represents a decrease in … [Read more...] about Chrysler Cuts Back Warranty Coverage for 2016 Models
Only a single American car earned the highest safety rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s latest round of crash tests. The underlying message to automakers, as tougher criteria shut out many high-scoring 2015 models: Make automatic-braking available and keep strengthening those frames. In total, 48 2016 models garnered the highest, Top Safety Pick+ rating. The Chrysler 200 was the only domestic car on that list, owing to its “good” (highest) score in the small front overlap, moderate front overlap, side, roof, and head-restraint tests, plus its offering an optional automatic-braking system that scored either an “advanced” or “superior” rating (the 200 scored “superior,” which indicates it can successfully prevent a crash from higher speeds). Those ratings qualify a car for the TSP+ slot.Last year, the criteria were easier. Cars that scored “acceptable” on the small front overlap test—which clips a … [Read more...] about Only One American Car Achieves Top IIHS Safety Rating, Some 2016 Models Drop
Typically, when an automaker announces a new model-year lineup and a certain car is absent, it’s assumed that model is being killed off. Take, for example, Nissan’s recent outline of its 2016 model-year lineup, which included mention that the Xterra SUV won’t continue past 2015. Or when Toyota axed the FJ Cruiser. We could go on, but the point is, usually these new-year no-shows stay forever dead. But not at Mitsubishi, which has excluded the tiny Mirage subcompact from its 2016 plans, but, curiously, isn’t permanently killing the little guy.So it’s a little strange, but stick with us here. This spring, Mitsubishi will introduce an early 2017 Mirage that will have powertrain and chassis updates. In the meantime, we imagine there are more than enough of the 2015 models sitting around dealer lots to keep Mitsu covered for the intervening months. So, the company saves the time and effort required to federalize and market a (brief) 2016-model-year Mirage, … [Read more...] about Mitsubishi Mirage Skipping 2016 Model Year, But Like a Phoenix, It Will Rise Again
