As Pontiac hobbyists we often state that, “We have gasoline running through our veins.” To many of us, life without the chemical-to-mechanical energy conversion that occurs inside the combustion chamber would seem almost unbearable. Even those passionate about the subject still know very little about the fuel that is a major focus of our interest. We know there are varied grades of gasoline, the stuff sold today is different from back in the glory days, and at the track you use race gas—and that’s about it. If that is the case with you, then this story will be an eye-opener. It is important to state early on in this primer that as the author, I, too was in the same situation as you when it came to a knowledge of gasoline. A few years back, I had the wonderful opportunity to spend an entire day at the research laboratory of a major oil company with the head engineer and chemist to entertain my questions. I learned more about fuel in that day than I had … [Read more...] about What To Know About Fuel – Give It The Gas
Convert mass to weight
Plunging below the 3,000-pound weight barrier has always been a challenging yet critical goal for those wanting quicker e.t’s at the strip. But thanks to the wide variety of lightweight aftermarket goodies available today, shedding pounds is easier than ever, regardless of vehicle make. From Mustangs to GTOs to Malibus to Mopars, you can take your pick from aluminum heads, fiberglass body panels, lightweight brakes, tubular control arms and frame stubs, Lexan windows, plastic springs, aluminum rearend parts, and other goodies that bolt right on. Open your wallet wide and you’ll see that it’s possible to shed as much as 600 pounds without ever touching a torch or holesaw. It has never been so easy to lose weight and go fast. While the performance industry has often used the gauge of power-to-weight ratio, we decided to look at weight-to-power (W/P) ratio instead, since it’s the pounds we’re improving as power remains the constant. We find the W/P ratio by … [Read more...] about Lose Weight Now Part II!
For many, building 500 horses isn’t a problem; figure out what pieces will create the best possible combination, prep as needed, and bolt it together. However, once this is done, that power will need to travel through a variety of components before causing the rear wheels to propel the car forward. If you’re using an automatic transmission, one of the key components is the fluid coupling between the engine and the transmission known as a torque converter. The creation of a race converter normally begins with a junkyard core. The smaller ones come from four-cylinder cars. The housing is cut open and, if it passes inspection, the impeller/rear cover and front cover (where the converter attaches to the flywheel) are strengthened by welding on steel anti-ballooning plates to the center circumference. The vane, or blade angle ends, may be rebent for better fluid direction and rewelded for strength. A more positive angle will increase the impeller’s efficiency by better … [Read more...] about Performance Torque Converters – Stall Call
When we spoke with Tom Gipe about his experiences with a decade of owning and tuning a dual-quad 528ci Hemi engine, he had already written up a substantial description documenting his learning curve. His words and photos here are, except for clarity, largely unedited, and show first-hand the challenges he faced in bringing his 1971 Plymouth ’Cuda to tip-top running order.—Geoff Stunkard To be honest, this began when the performance of my 528ci Dick Landy Industries Hemi engine had begun running dreadfully. This resulted in rough idling, surging, hesitation, and smelling up the garage with gasoline fumes that lasted for days. Since my 1971 Hemi ’Cuda has a Shaker hood scoop, a view of the engine and making carb adjustments is not easy without removing 20 minutes worth of hardware. Coincident with my discontent with the operation of my ’Cuda, I read a series of articles on proper distributor and carburetor tune-ups to get optimal performance and helped to give me … [Read more...] about Zero To Hero! Chevrolet today introduced one of the most capable drop-tops on the market: the 2015 Corvette Z06 Convertible. With at least 625 horsepower, and 635 pound-feet of torque, the Z06 is also the most powerful convertible ever produced by Chevrolet. “The Z06 Convertible is a world-class supercar in every sense,” said Mark Reuss, executive vice president, Global Product Development. “Only a handful of convertibles in the world bring more than 600 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. Even fewer can match the advanced technologies, aerodynamic design, and visceral driving experience of the Z06 Convertible.” This is the first Z06 Convertible offered from the factory since 1963 when the Z06 option package was introduced for endurance racing. Records show only 199 Corvette orders with a Z06 package that year, including one convertible. Recent technological advancements enable the building of a modern Z06 Convertible, said Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter. … [Read more...] about 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible

If there’s one thing even cooler than cruising around in a brand-new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, it’s doing so with the sun shining down on you. As has been the case for all but the second generation of the Camaro, the new sixth-generation car will also offer a convertible model. Revealed today, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro convertible goes on sale in early 2016. The power-folding soft top can be opened or closed at speeds up to 30 mph, and when the car is parked, owners can even control the top via the Camaro’s remote. The entire top operation is automatic, so there’s no need for drivers to unlatch anything before opening the cabin up to the atmosphere. When the roof is lowered, a hard tonneau cover automatically fits over the fabric roof for a tidier appearance than the exposed, folded roof in the outgoing droptop Camaro. Overall, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro convertible does an admirable job of maintaining the sleek profile and looks of its hardtop sibling. Like the … [Read more...] about 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Sheds Weight, Keeps Sleek Profile
