Launching a new car show of any type is tough. You have to find the right venue. Get permits and insurance. Do promotion, a poster, and a program. Arrange security and parking. Oh, and then there’s the matter of cars. Probably judges too. And it sure would be nice if a few people showed up. The Assistance League of Southern California made it all look easy. They had the advantage of being based in an area filled with great hardware, and the organization was smart enough to get some local car types on its board and show committees. No matter, it’s a ton of work, and anyone who was at the Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena, California on May 21 for the inaugural Los Angeles Concours d’Elegance witnessed something well above and beyond the typical first year effort. Taking place in the shadow of the Rose Bowl, there was something here for everyone, plus a better-than-average display of racecars. The show’s themes were safe, if predictable: Ferrari was the … [Read more...] about Ten Coolest Classic Cars: Inaugural Los Angeles Concours d’Elegance
Going away to college and getting out from under your parents’ ever-watchful eyes is an exciting time. There are as many solid choices as bad ones out there. Your needs and budget, and the car’s wow factor, all play a role in how you’ll roll to college. We’ve compiled a list of cars for every budget based on our scientifically generated coolness factor (just kidding, it’s totally subjective). Our picks aren’t your run-of-the-mill Toyota Corolla or Volkswagen New Beetle. These cars can help you navigate campus life, will be a hit with the ladies (or guys), and impress your friends. Before you ask why we didn’t include Nissan 240SXs, B16/B18-powered Hondas/Acuras, Mitsubishi Eclipse turbos, or Fox-body 5.0 Mustangs, know that we set some realistic criteria … [Read more...] about Coolest College Cars for Any Budget
President Obama has been riding around in his Cadillac/GMC Topkick hybrid presidential limo – also known as Cadillac One, or “The Beast” – for four years now, and it appears the Cadillac may still be used in his next term. That said, many previous presidents have received new limos every four years, and for today’s Thread of the Day we want to know which new car you think would make the coolest presidential limo if the president upgraded this year. Cadillac has had a lock on building the presidential limo since Bill Clinton was in office. President Clinton rode in the back of a Cadillac Fleetwood for both of his terms, while President George W. Bush used the Cadillac DTS’ during his presidency. Prior to the Clinton Administration, Lincoln built the presidents’ limos. With that in mind, which modern vehicle do you think would make the best presidential limo? Should Cadillac make a CTS or XTS limo? Should Lincoln take the lead with an MKZ … [Read more...] about Thread of the Day: What New Car Would Make the Coolest Presidential Limo?
As the president of the United States, we know Mr. Obama has a lot on his plate, so we took the liberty of helping him out by checking one thing off his to-do list: choosing a new presidential limo. Earlier this week, we asked our readers what new car would make the coolest presidential limo, and we’re sharing nine of the most stand-out responses, plus one of our own suggestions. Here are our top picks for new cars to put our president in: Considering President Obama wants to push green technology in vehicles, Dan Murphy thought it was only appropriate for him to be transported in a Tesla Model S. “I would like to see the … [Read more...] about Your Say: Top 10 New Cars That Would Make Cool Presidential Limos
An enthusiast in the Motor Trend forums has a $17,000 college-car budget, and his automotive choice won’t be easy. With that much of a budget, he can afford anything from a new front-drive hatchback to a used Mazda Miata MX-5 or Infiniti G35 coupe. In today’s Thread of the Day, take a look at the requirements of robert.sanfil and then tell us, what would make the coolest college car for under $17,000? In the original thread, robert.sanfil notes that the car he chooses must be fun to drive, have a manual transmission if possible, and not be too expensive with gas or insurance premiums. Above all, though, the car must be under $17,000 and have less than 45,000 miles. Two cars that have caught his eye so far include a used Mazda Miata MX-5 and a used Infiniti G35 coupe, though he’s had difficulty locating the latter within the mileage requirements. What would you suggest for someone seeking a fun-to-drive college car for $17,000 with under about 45,000 miles and, … [Read more...] about Thread of the Day: Name the Coolest College Car Under $17,000
With the long list of products revealed at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, it’s easy to be overwhelmed. There are so many new cars and new features here that it’s easy to miss some of the cool details. Here are the five best we found. 1. Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Adjustable Rear Wing Race-inspired and completely functional, the center element of the rear wing on the new Z06 lets drivers adjust exactly how much aerodynamic downforce they want on the back of their car. As any racer can tell you, when you’re trying to put 625-plus horsepower to the ground exiting a turn, you want downforce pushing the tires to the ground. This feature will make owners who track their cars very happy. 2. Subaru WRX STI Sound Pipe As new cars have gotten quieter and more isolated inside, some of the driving experience has been lost. A unique and evocative name can transform a good car into one consumers form an emotional attachment with and later buy. But if automakers choose the wrong name, it could spell disaster for what otherwise might be a perfectly decent car. We already discussed the top 10 vehicles that should be renamed based on Motor Trend reader suggestions, and now we turn the tables. Last week, we asked our readers what new cars have the best names; here are our top 10 favorite responses. Ford F-150 SVT Raptor – Raptors were especially fearsome dinosaurs because of their speed and enormous claws used to rip apart larger dinosaurs. Perhaps that’s why ChallengerFerrariF430 thinks the SVT’s Raptor’s name is so fitting, because it tears up just about any rugged dirt trail it encounters. Aston Martin Vanquish – The British carmaker has had success in pairing stunning car designs with equally awesome car names such as Vantage and Rapide. The Vanquish, was a fan favorite, with … [Read more...] about Your Say: Top 10 Coolest New Car Names
Ferrari unveiled its new Formula One contender last week, the SF16-H. The Scuderia’s chief designer, Simone Resta, described it as ‘one of the most beautiful Ferraris ever’, and the extra dose of white in the livery was a conspicuous nod to the 312 T cars driven to championship victory by Niki Lauda and Jody Scheckter (in 1975, 1977 and 1979), and into immortality by Gilles Villeneuve. But one of the most beautiful? If it beats the new Mercedes W07 out of the blocks, it’ll start looking very pretty indeed, but until then allow us to cite 1990’s 641 as the first Ferrari F1 car to appear in TG.com’s 50 coolest racing cars list. Not only cool, and not just beautiful, either, the 641 is also officially a work of art: it’s the only racing car to be part of the Museum of Modern Art in New York’s permanent collection. (MoMA also owns a Cisitalia 202, a Willys Jeep, a VW Beetle, a Jaguar E-type, and a Smart. Interesting curating.) … [Read more...] about Top Gear’s coolest racing cars: Ferrari 641
The final numbers for the 2013 UK car market show a growth in the overall market to more than 2.25 million, a rise of more than 10 per cent. The two factors that traditionally drive the growth in car sales – house prices and unemployment figures – were both positive last year and there was an additional one-off boost from the Payment Protection Insurance compensation. The latter factor will not be repeated in 2014 (unless the banks are forced to payout for yet another scandal), so the market is likely to stay flat in 2014. Within the market, the big trend was fragmentation. The two biggest segments (superminis and small family cars) both grew at about the same rate as the whole market with growth of 12%, but some of the smaller segments grew much faster – both city cars (up 16%) and SUVs (up 19%) grew rapidly, while the traditional upper medium car really suffered (down 28%). It may be that in a couple of years, Ford’s principal large family car will actually be … [Read more...] about The new car market winners and losers of 2013
