Remember the David Brown Speedback GT? Course you do. Engine and chassis by Jaguar XKR, styling by 1960s inspiration, price from a telephone directory. It’s a year since TG.com drove the first prototype and decided it’s “a hugely charismatic car, backed by an equally charismatic individual of the sort we could do with more of in the car world.” So, we thought we’d catch up with said charismatic individual, and find out how David Brown and his brainchild are getting on. The first question, of course: how’s business? David won’t let on how many cars he’s shifted. We change tack. Is he satisfied with business? Surprised, even? “We’re satisfied. The amount we’ve created in the relatively short amount of time we’ve had the company is fantastic. The lead times on most sports cars are 5-7 years.” But of course, they’re not usually borrowing the rolling chassis from someone else… … [Read more...] about Interview: how’s business at David Brown Automotive?
This is the David Brown Automotive Speedback, a retro re-body of the Jaguar XKR. And no, that’s not the David Brown who used to be boss of Aston. We’ve been looking forward to the full reveal since the company revealed performance details last month, and we’re rather pleased to tell you they remain unchanged. The Speedback gets a supercharged, 5.0-litre Jag V8 producing 507bhp and 461lb ft of torque. That means the DB5-shaped retronaut gets from 0-62mph in a healthy 4.8 seconds, and will hit a shade more than 155mph. But this is much more an exercise in design flagellation than performance. The outline’s been penned Alan Mobberely, who Land Roverista may know as the man responsible for all three generations of Discovery. He says the, erm, classic outline’s not just a modern reimagining of the DB-5. Apparently, there are shades of Ferrari and Maserati design in there somewhere too. Turning Mobberely’s vision into reality … [Read more...] about David Brown Automotive reveals Speedback
The David Brown Automotive Project 2 will be a model to sit alongside the Speedback GT in the manufacturer’s retro-inspired lineup, the company has confirmed. David Brown Automotive did reveal that the model would be launched in the summer, and is described as “The Original Remastered”, suggesting that the car to have inspired it will be an older model than the Aston Martin DB5, which inspired the Speedback GT. Preview images show typically little of the car, though. Read our original road test of the Aston Martin DB5 Like the Speedback GT, Project 2 will be built at the company’s headquarters in Silverstone, and will be launched with three unspecified derivatives, with the most likely approach being different levels of focus and performance, rather than differing body styles. The company's use of 'driver-focused technologies' on the car, as well as the shapes and colours, further suggest another simple, 60s-era model. First deliveries of the … [Read more...] about David Brown Automotive to launch second production model
Reimagining vintage cars is all the rage these days. Artisans like Singer and Icon have made a name for themselves redesigning and overhauling classic cars and trucks into their own image, retaining the original soul of the car while adding in a healthy dose of their own aesthetic. Now, it looks like David Brown Automotive is tossing its hat in the ring with a new reimagined Mini Cooper. It’s called the Mini Remastered, and it’s a pint-sized follow-up to David Brown’s enigmatic Speedback GT. The build begins by taking a used Mini down to the bare sheetmetal, where the shell is de-seamed and smoothed out for a pure, sleek appearance. Despite the size, David Brown says the little coupe is chock-full of all manner of sound deadening to keep things calm on the inside. The interior is a blend of modern retro-chic, outfitted with a bowlful of brushed and milled aluminum components and special handmade touches. It’s high-tech as well, featuring a full infotainment … [Read more...] about David Brown Automotive Reimagines Classic Mini Coopers
automotive history, you should. But if you don't, maybe you'll recognize him by his initials. The letters DB have adorned some of the most iconic Aston Martins ever made, so named after the man who bought the marque in 1947 (and Lagonda the year after), transforming it into the automaker we know today. This, however, is another David Brown. Which makes sense, since the former Aston chief passed away over two decades ago. But this David Brown started out in the family business manufacturing earth-moving equipment that was later sold to Caterpillar, and has since been involved in a number of ventures, but he's now bent on returning the name – whoever it refers to – to the British sports car market. The newly formed David Brown Automotive is working on an original sports car, tentatively dubbed Project Judi, to be revealed this coming April. Former Land Rover designer Alana Mobberley is responsible for the form and engineering consultancy Envisage Group is preparing it for … [Read more...] about David Brown Automotive to launch with new sports car in April
Just over a year ago, the Sportback GT debuted from coachbuilder David Brown Automotive to combine the classic lines of the Aston Martin DB5 with modern underpinnings. Now, the luxurious British coupe is making its way across the pond for a US debut later this summer. With a price of $753,000, you're not going to see these coachbuilt creations on every corner. To make sure that the GT catches the eye of the right clientele, the company is premiering it during the swanky event at The Quail during the 2015 Monterey Car Week in August.Despite the retro look on the outside from former Land Rover designer Alan Mobberley, much of the mechanical underpinnings for the Speedback GT are sourced from the Jaguar XKR. Propulsion is provided by a 5.0-liter V8 making 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque and linked to a six-speed automatic. Inside, passengers find quite posh surroundings with leather upholstery with wood trim. … [Read more...] about David Brown Automotive Speedback GT launches in US
Speedback GT is a beautiful bespoke piece of British machinery. As impressive as it may be, at $753,000, it's far out of the reach of most consumers. To expand the brand's reach, Brown and his team announced that they're working on a second model, known internally as Project 2, that will debut sometime this spring.Details about the Project 2 are scarce. The car will slot below the Speedback GT, but that leaves a lot of room for interpretation. The new model will be build at David Brown Automotive's new 18,000-square-foot headquarters in Silverstone, England. Like the Speedback GT, which is based on the old Jaguar XKR, the Project 2 will be a highly worked-over version of an existing road car. Expect 100 cars a year, in addition to the current Speedback GT production. The teaser image shows a pair of retro helmets, so don't be surprised if this is a new take on the classic British roadster. Look for more details in the coming months leading up to a on-sale date of September.Related … [Read more...] about David Brown Automotive to reveal new Project 2 this spring
Aston Martin inspired coupes, David Brown Automotive, was about to introduce a new, cheaper vehicle positioned under its exquisitely priced Speedback GT model. Since the Jaguar-based Speedback GT costs a significant $753,000, there's quite a bit of room underneath it to introduce a more modest means of transport, without cheapening out. Now, details of the car, dubbed "Project 2," have surfaced, and it's quite a surprise. What David Brown Automotive has come up with is a "remastered," rethought classic Mini. While the car looks just like a Mini at a passing glance, the body panels along with the chassis are new, and the car has been given a smoothening. All the body seams that were commonplace on the classic original have been rounded off, and the interior is a custom job complete with plentiful leather and Pioneer touchscreen. The new dashboard is a little closer to Japanese retro cars than either the classic Mini or the current, BMW-made equivalent. The drivetrain remains the trusted … [Read more...] about David Brown Automotive remasters classic Mini at maxi price
Hey, you! Stateside moneybags enamored of Speed Speedback’s baadasssss song! British boutique concern David Brown Automotive informs us that you’re finally in luck! Their Astonoid Speedback GT is coming to the United States and will make its American debut at The Quail during Monterey’s August cavalcade of high-dollar automotive things, stuff, ’n’ spendy whatnot.Priced at $795,000, the Speedback isn’t exactly what we’d call cheap. Built on the bones of the Jaguar XKR, one might think of it as a future-past version of the DB7, a 1990s car that traced its lineage back to the Jaguar XJS of the 1970s. It’s bizarro-continuum stuff, for sure. Still, that 503-horse blown AJ V-8 is a damn peach of a mill. It’s a much, much more inspiring engine than say, the smog-choked Ford Windsor used in Zimmer’s Golden Spirits of the 1980s. Golden Spirit, however Floridian gilded-trash that name might be, at least does not sound like a cetacean … [Read more...] about Brownian Motion: $795,000 David Brown Automotive Speedback GT Coming to U.S.
