Lexus continues to grow and develop both its production F performance division as well as its GT3 motorsports efforts, announcing today that it will compete in the Pikes Peak challenge with an all-new Lexus RC F GT Concept. Piloting the race-prepped RC F GT will be racer and industry personality Justin Bell. Although the Lexus RC F GT Concept keeps the same 467-hp, 5.0-liter V-8 engine and eight-speed automatic as the production model, Lexus managed to shave off a crucial 800 pounds of flab. Carbon fiber parts replace the hood, roof, trunk lid, door panels, front and rear fenders, rear spoiler, interior trim, and dashboard. Super sticky Yokohama ADVAN tires help keep the Lexus RC F GT carving corners to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak, instead of tumbling down the mountainside. As far as first impressions go, Bell is pleased with the Lexus RC F GT. “With very little time behind the wheel, the RC F GT Concept has already proven fast and easy to drive, very much like the … [Read more...] about Lexus RC F GT Concept, Scion FR-S Set to Race at Pikes Peak

Lexus has confirmed its entry for the upcoming 2015 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, with the RC F GT Concept set to be piloted by British racer, media personality and Le Mans winner, Justin Bell. Lexus will enter its RC F racer in the Time Attack class of the fabled hill climb event – now in its 93rd iteration. The event sees competitors power up a course 20 km in length with varying conditions. At the end of it all, racers will have completed a total of 156 turns and stand at a height of 4,300 metres at the peak. This entry will mark the Japanese carmaker’s return to the event since it fielded its IS F CCS-R racer back in 2013. Like its predecessor, the RC F GT Concept will serve as a testbed for the brand’s F performance division. As for the car itself, the Lexus RC F GT Concept will be powered by a 5.0 litre 2UR-GSE V8 engine – in this state of tune for the race, the engine pumps out over 467 hp at 7,100 rpm and more than 529 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm. … [Read more...] about Lexus RC F GT Concept confirmed for 2015 Pikes Peak
Have you ever wondered how Santa can deliver so many presents all around the world in just one night? Well, fortunately, Lexus was recently pondering that same question. In turn, it inspired a fun viral clip called “Santa’s Hot Lap” that is as cool as snow. Lexus’ official test driver, Scott Pruett, recently dressed up like the big man in red for the charity stunt that benefits Toys for Tots. Filmed by Lexus Vehicles, the clip shows Santa using a Lexus RC F GT to test his elves to see if they can hold up with their boss during his speedy trips around the world. (Keep in mind, when it comes to speed and power, this is no ordinary “sleigh.” The Lexus RC F GT Concept is an RC F on a diet that was designed to compete in the IMSA’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.) Riding shotgun during a hot lap in a high-performance car for charity? Sounds easy enough, right? Right — except Lexus threw in a catch. … [Read more...] about Lexus RC F GT Takes a Spin on ‘Santa’s Lap’: Video
Where’s a great place for Lexus’ engineers to “experiment with prototype components, tuning ideas, settings, and software development”? On a mountain, apparently. On June 28, Lexus’ tech wizards will be doing just that as the automaker campaigns its new RC F GT Concept in the Time Attack class of the 93rd running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The IS F CCS-Rs Lexus ran in the 2013 race helped the company develop key components, such as the engine and gearbox, for the production version of the RC F. FIA GT world champion and 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Justin Bell will be piloting this year’s Lexus entry across 12.42 miles, through 156 turns, and up from the starting point at 9,390 feet to the summit at 14,115 feet. The RC F GT Concept he’ll be using to do that may have the same 5.0-liter V8 and eight-speed automatic of the everyday RC F, but its carbon fiber body panels, polycarbonate windows, and stripped interior mean it weighs … [Read more...] about The Lexus RC F GT Concept is Ready to Climb Up Pikes Peak
Earlier this month, Pro driver Scott Pruett took some lucky media folk around the Long Beach street circuit for a few hot laps in the ultra-hot Lexus RC F GT Concept. The Concept utilizes carbon more enthusiastically than Donald Trump utilizes hairspray. There’s carbon fiber in the doors, trunk, hood, and fenders. There’s polycarbonate in the side windows. The interior has been pretty much stripped clean, and the center console has been replaced with a carbon-fiber “tent,” as Car and Driver puts it. All of this serves to lighten the car significantly, to the tune of 3130 pounds dripping wet, which is more than 900 pounds less than the “two-ton slab of iron” RC F. But just because Lexus lightened the car, that doesn’t mean they lightened the power, as the Concept still employs that naturally aspirated, 5.0-liter V8 found in the the regular RC F (as well as the GS F and the future LC 500). But instead of 467 horsepower, the GT Concept makes … [Read more...] about Could Lexus Unleash This RC F GT Concept?
Five years ago, would you have believed me if I told you that Lexus sent two cars to compete among the world’s top performance vehicles in Car and Driver‘s Lightning Lap? What if I told you that Lexus also bested every other vehicle in the competition? Unless you’re extremely prescient, I’m going to guess the answer would have been no. But here we are, in the midst of the F performance movement, and that’s exactly what happened. At the venerable car mag’s annual event, the 2016 Lexus RC F GT Concept beat 20 of the greatest performance cars around by posting a lightning fast time of 2:43.2 around the longest, possibly best road course in America: Virginia International Raceway. Bear in mind, the one-off prototype is “effectively a race car” and wasn’t competing in any of the five price classes C&D laid out, since it has no retail price tag. But even though the concept was built for the track, it’s still quite … [Read more...] about 2016 Lexus RC F GT Concept Bests the Best in Lightning Lap 2016
The Lexus RC F GT concept track car and LC 500 Coupé have been on display at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend. Positioned between the Lexus RC F production car and the RC F GT3 race car, the GT concept is more than 360kg lighter than the RC F. It has the same 5.0-litre V8 powerplant and eight-speed automatic transmission as the RC F, with some minor tweaks, including a performance exhaust. With the substantial drop in weight, the RC F GT is likely to better the RC F’s 0-62mph time of 4.5sec. It tackled the hill climb at Goodwood along with the RC F GT3, LFA and GS F. The suspension has been altered to allow more adjustment for different tracks and competitions, while the car’s software has been tweaked to help focus its performance for track use. The concept, first shown in the US earlier this year at the Pikes Peake international hill climb, was created as an example of how the platforms and powertrains of Lexus’ F models can be utilised. The LC … [Read more...] about Lexus RC F GT concept showcased at Goodwood

The tires were cold, the brakes were cold, the track was cold, and driver Scott Pruett looked a little chilly himself, having barely turned any time in this particular car. Even so, when the starter waved us out on a sunny California day in May, Pruett hammered it into the concrete corridors of the Long Beach street circuit where the walls close in and one small mistake sends you into the bumpers of a pinball machine. And we weren’t even wearing helmets.Toyota has a long and deep association with the Grand Prix of Long Beach dating back to its days as a U.S. round for the Formula 1 championship. The inaugural Toyota Pro/Celebrity support race in 1977 had nine starters, of which just two finished (writer/racer Sam Posey and actor/football player Shelly Novack). So it was no surprise that this year’s IndyCar event would be the stage for Lexus to wheel out and give chauffeured media rides in its RC F GT concept, a tuned and heavily carbonized version of Lexus’s big … [Read more...] about Big Mouth, Big Speed: We Ride in the Track-Bred Lexus RC F GT Concept at Long Beach
Lap time: 2:43.2 We can’t classify this thing as a real car because it’s not. Yet. This special RC F is a one-off prototype vision for a track-only toy like the Aston Martin Vulcan. Lexus plans to sell it in Japan to rich folk who would rather do playtime in local products than in imports. With carbon-fiber bodywork, polycarbonate windows, and 721 pounds of Lexus luxury scrubbed from its curb weight, the RC F GT concept is pure track rat. For example, there’s a bare interior, just metal painted black, with a full roll cage and, instead of a center console, there’s a carbon-fiber switch plate with aircraft-style toggles and a bank of push fuses. Twist the big red master power handle and throw a switch; the fuel pump behind you fires with a piercing, distinctly un-Lexus-like “Scree!” Then the V-8 barks to life with a ferocity rare among Toyota products. We’re going with 500 horsepower from the mildly breathed-on … [Read more...] about The Un-Lexus: Lexus RC F GT Concept Lapped at VIR!
