There are rumors that NASCAR is interested in producing a Hollywood movie to give the sport a boost in popularity. If another NASCAR movie is ever going to rekindle America’s interest in the sport it should look to the formula followed by the two most popular NASCAR movies of all time. It has been eight years since Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby was released and 24 years since Days of Thunder made its debut. Each movie has made more than $165,000,000 worldwide and both use the same plot recipe if you break it down far enough. Actually, you don’t have to break it down at all, it’s pretty obvious. We’ll take a look at the components needed to make a blockbuster NASCAR movie. Caution: Spoilers Ahead Both movies portrayals of racing are both about as accurate as The Fast and The Furious, with Cole Trickle able to pass cars at will by simply downshifting and Ricky Bobby moving from pit crew to the driver seat as easily as picking up an always delicious … [Read more...] about How to Make a NASCAR Movie: Lessons from Talladega Nights & Days of Thunder
The 14th running of the Holley National Hot Rod Reunion was held over Father’s Day weekend at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Per the norm for this late spring affair, hundreds of racers, car show enthusiasts and thousands of spectators were welcome to a hot and humid Kentucky climate. Despite the heat, the facility was absolutely packed to the gills with old school drag racing machines, swap meet vendors, car show entries and drag racing fans eager for their annual nitromethane fix. The trademark covered grandstands provided relief from the direct heat as spectators filled the bleachers from sun up to sun down on each of the three day event, eager for some thrilling quarter mile drag racing. The NHRA Museum and event director Steve Gibbs named Bill Bader Sr. as Grand Marshal of the event for his undisputable successes in drag racing, primarily in his time as owner of Norwalk Dragway (now Summit Motorsports Park). Ron and Steve Boggs, Austin Myers, Ed … [Read more...] about Adam Sorokin Scores Top Fuel Title at Holley National Hot Rod Reunion!
It’s a partnership that few could have envisioned. Margot Robbie has been revealed as Nissan’s new electric vehicle (EV) ambassador, and the occasion was marked by the Suicide Squad actress racing Nissan’s radical all-electric BladeGlider prototype around the famous Monaco GP circuit. Robbie, who also starred in The Wolf of Wall Street, put the 190 km/h three-seater through its paces around the closed Monaco street circuit before racing another BladeGlider. The pair of 272 PS/707 Nm cars raced through the Principality’s iconic tunnel and diced with each other along Massenet before finishing in the glamour of Casino Square. In the video above, the 26-year old Aussie beauty is also seen demonstrating the drifting prowess of Nissan BladeGlider around one of the most famous corners in the world of motorsport – the Fairmont Hairpin. “There are only two of these in the world, so, perhaps take it easy?” the system asked, to which Robbie replied … [Read more...] about Margot Robbie is Nissan’s new EV ambassador, drives 190 km/h BladeGlider on Monaco GP circuit
► CAR meets Evel for one of his last ever interviews► Recalling a life of boozing, boasting and breaking bones► ‘Whatever you do, enjoy your life. It’ll go so fast you won’t believe it' Most of us will remember motorcycle stunt legend Evel Knievel for his spectacular jumps, his showmanship and, of course, his bone-mashing crashes. I’ll never forget helping him choose a new sofa.I wasn’t sure what to expect when I rang his doorbell (marked ‘Forbes’), in Clearwater, Florida. But I’ll admit furniture shopping wasn’t my first thought.‘This is an orthopaedic couch,’ chimed in a keen sales assistant as we stood discussing the merits of a white leather porno movie-style three-seater half an hour later. ‘It’s designed to mimic the natural curve of the spine.’‘It won’t … [Read more...] about When CAR met Evel Knievel: CAR+ archive, April 2008
The Grand Tour airs tonight, at 12:01 am GMT (7:01 pm on America's east coast). Expect our review of the series premiere later tonight, but before that happens, we decided to rewatch the final, truncated season of Top Gear with Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond at the helm.Season 22 was one of constant ups and downs. The many unfunny and cheesy segments were matched by some of the best films since Top Gear's golden era during the late 2000s. For every ambulance film, we saw a Canadian adventure. For every Peugeot segment, there was a test of the BMW M3 and i8. Inconsistencies were a central feature. Recognizing that could temper some of the feverish expectations as we prepare to watch episode one of The Grand Tour.Expect controversy from Top Gear, but an international incident? It's because of the disaster during the Patagonia Special that it's difficult to judge TG's last big-budget road trip. On the surface, it had a promising concept – drive three V8-powered … [Read more...] about A look back on the final season of Top Gear with Clarkson, Hammond, and May

Race-car driver Matt Martin has his own Web site, his own fan club, his own 7500-square-foot shop manned by a full-time crew. To haul around his 40-foot-long trailer, he has a diesel truck that sleeps six and has its own kitchen and satellite TV. He has maybe a dozen race cars at his disposal. He has a big-name sponsor, Gatorade. His picture has been on 20 million cereal boxes. He has been profiled on CBS, ESPN, ABC, NBC, and Fox. The New York Times called him "bankable." And, ladies, he's single! He is also 10 years old. Matt's father, the NASCAR driver and Viagra spokesman Mark Martin, makes no apology for what one observer wild-guesses is a $250,000 hardware investment in Matt's, um, career, if it is possible for a 10-year-old to have a career. "I will give my son every advantage I can. If he were interested in playing the piano, I'd buy him the finest piano made and hire the best piano teachers in the world." He says he would also support his son … [Read more...] about And Baby Makes More
Last March, a line of autograph seekers snaked through a Kmart store in Jonesboro, Georgia. At the head of the line, fans pressed tightly around a table to see and hear their hero, NASCAR legend Darrell Waltrip. Suddenly, there was a burst of laughter from the table. Way back in the line, where folks couldn't have heard the remark, a good ol' boy piped up, to no one in particular: "Sounds like another Darrell Waltrip story to me." And so it came full circle in that store in Jonesboro. The Kmart ad campaign that featured "Another Darrell Waltrip Story" became the litany of a true-to-life Kmart shopper. And through it all, ol' D.W. was just being hisself, proving that after 29 years of racing in the NASCAR Winston Cup series, the 53-year-old Waltrip is still the freshest character in NASCAR--everywhere but on the track. And on the track? Well, as bad as it has been going on this, his "Victory Tour 2000" farewell season, Waltrip could use a boost from "Rocket Man." As … [Read more...] about D.W.’s Last Stand
All this talk about Sarah Fisher's being an 18-year-old Indy Racing League driver must cease. She's 19. "Her birthday was two weeks ago," says her mother, Reba, who looks like a slightly older, similarly bespectacled version of Sarah. Wasn't Mom nervous about her daughter's debut at last October's Mall.com 500, the season-ending IRL race at the fast 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway, where she had qualified at just over 213 mph? "Not really," Reba Fisher said, sitting in a golf cart outside her daughter's garage at the speedway. "It's just another race." Well, maybe. Sarah Fisher lists her height at five feet two, but she seems smaller and could easily pass for 15. But the college student from Commercial Point, Ohio, who hopes eventually to graduate from Ohio State with a degree in mechanical engineering, has been racing for 14 years. Her dad raced sprint cars, her mom raced go-karts. When Sarah turned five, mom Reba said to dad Dave: "It's time we get … [Read more...] about Can This Little Girl Help Save The IRL?
