Daniel Ricciardo has won the 2016 Malaysia Grand Prix, while his team mate Max Verstappen finished second. Mercedes driver and current championship leader Nico Rosberg took third place, while his team mate Lewis Hamilton suffered a retirement due to an engine failure. This has helped Rosberg extend his lead over Hamilton in the World Drivers Championship to 23 points. The Malaysia GP was filled with drama and retirements. The start of the race saw Sebastian Vettel squeezing into turn 1 and thus making contact with Max Verstappen's Red Bull. This contact turned the Ferrari's nose towards Rosberg's Mercedes, which was turning in on the outside line. The Ferrari's left front tyre collided with the Mercedes' right rear tyre, sending the latter into a massive spin. Though Rosberg was able to control the spin and get on with the race, Vettel suffered a broken front suspension, thus ending his race. He was later penalised with a three-place grid drop in the next race for causing the … [Read more...] about Daniel Ricciardo wins Malaysia GP, Rosberg comes third
On paper, it’s a a foregone conclusion. The new Audi SQ7 TDI with 435 hp versus the 10,600 hp Red Bull Alpha Jet – a demilitarised Fairchild Dornier Alpha Jet fighter plane – in a 300-metre race on an airstrip. Not so soon, says Audi’s Le Mans and DTM champion Mike Rockenfeller in the flagship Q7. Announced last week, the Audi SQ7 TDI is the most powerful diesel SUV on the market and also the world’s first production car to feature an “electric turbo” system. Audi says that the 435 hp/900 Nm biturbo V8’s electric powered compressor (EPC) augments the work of the two exhaust gas turbochargers, particularly at low rpms, providing for “extremely dynamic” off-the-line performance. Response time is 250 milliseconds. We’re guessing that the real world acceleration experience would feel a lot faster than what the official 0-100 km/h time of 4.8 seconds suggests. More info on the EPC, as well as the new 4.0 litre TDI’s … [Read more...] about VIDEO: Audi SQ7 TDI vs 10,600 hp Red Bull Alpha Jet
Oh boy, have we got a surprise for you all. Here’s a Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG, photographed at NZ Wheels Bangsar Autohaus. That’s right, the big daddy of all SUVs is available for purchase here in Malaysia, priced at RM1,099,888. As expensive as that sounds, that’s the price to pay to be the coolest cat in town. In this AMG form, the G-Wagen is powered by a 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8 engine that makes 544 hp and 760 Nm of torque. All that grunt is transferred to all four wheels through its AMG SpeedShift Plus 7G-Tronic transmission, pushing this 2550 kg behemoth to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. Top speed is limited to 210 km/h. In charge of reigning down the speed are large, cross-drilled ventilated disc brakes behind those 20-inch wheels with 275/50R20 tyres. Looking like that, with that sort of performance, you wouldn’t expect it to be light on fuel. And it’s not – it’s claimed to average 13.8 litres per 100 km on the combined cycle. Lean it’s … [Read more...] about Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG in Malaysia – RM1.1 million
Here’s one for the budding engineer in you: Infiniti has opened applications for the Infiniti Performance Engineering Academy announced last year, a competition that gives students a chance to become Formula 1 engineers at Infiniti Red Bull Racing in the UK. The programme will see the top three applicants working on a 12-month engineering assignment with the four-time world champions at their base in Milton Keynes. Apart from working with both the team as well as Infiniti’s road car engineers in nearby Cranfield, they will also receive free accommodation, a full salary, an Infiniti company car as well as a behind-the-scenes access to the British Grand Prix. According to Andreas Sigl, Infiniti global director of Formula 1, the company will be looking for candidates that “really demonstrate they understand the potential of crossover between Formula 1 and road car technologies”, adding that the company is pushing for further success on road and track. “What … [Read more...] about Infiniti Performance Engineering Academy – a chance to become F1 engineers at Red Bull Racing
Last month, we reported that the Renault Megane RS Red Bull Racing RB8 will be officially launched in Malaysia by October, and here it is, the limited edition version of the Megane RS 265, now available for purchase. Only 15 units (out of 815 worldwide) will be brought in by local Renault distributor TC Euro Cars, and we hear that 10 of those have already been accounted for, so you’ll need to be quick to own this RM252,888 (on-the-road with insurance) hot hatch. That’s a substantial premium over the standard RS 265 Cup (RM234,526 OTR without insurance), but exclusivity is guaranteed. TC Euro Cars managed to secure a bigger allocation this time around – only five units of the previous black/yellow RB7 was brought in. The Red Bull Racing RB8 is a celebratory special to mark Renault and RBR’s third consecutive F1 world championship win. Based on the RS 265 Cup, the RB8 gets a special Twilight Blue colour inspired by Vettel’s race car. UHP Bridgestone … [Read more...] about Renault Megane RS Red Bull Racing RB8 – RM252,888

Renault Malaysia, in a Facebook posting, announced that the limited edition will arrive locally early in the fourth quarter this year. Q4 2013 starts in October, which is next month. As with the RB7, only a few units will be brought in by TC Euro Cars. The Red Bull Racing RB8 is a celebratory special to mark Renault and RBR’s third consecutive F1 world championship win. Based on the RS 265, the RB8 gets a special Crépuscule Blue colour inspired by Vettel’s race car. The front winglets, rear spoiler, door handles and side mirror covers are painted in contrasting Platinum Grey. Customary Red Bull Racing decals complete the special dress-up. The Malaysian GP weekend started today, and we were in Sepang to warm up for the big race this Sunday. Our man Chris Ng will be in SIC all weekend with the Lotus team (you’ll hear from him shortly), but I couldn’t resist making the trip down to catch the buzz as well. My host was champions Red Bull Racing, the energy drink maker the whole paddock is trying to beat. Friday is always a quiet day at the Malaysian GP, and the best time to snoop around in the garage, with permission of course! Without a guide, it all looked like a bunch of men dismantling two cars (after P2), but thankfully I had the lovely Georgie from RBR to shoot questions at. Georgie explained that there’s a team of up to 15 blokes working on each car, and they’re divided into few teams that take care of certain sections – floor, wings, gearbox etc. They were busy stripping the cars to improve and tweak for qualifying tomorrow, and will continue to work till 4am tomorrow morning. They will … [Read more...] about Malaysian GP: Smooth Friday practice for Red Bull – we hang out with the champs (sort of) in their garage!
This shouldn’t really come as a surprise. Sebastian Vettel has yet again emerged victorious, this time at the Turkish Grand Prix. The reigning World Champion was the first to cross the finish line after starting the 58-lap race from pole position. Teammate Mark Webber finished in second making it a 1-2 for Red Bull. Third place went to a well-deserved Fernando Alonso, giving Ferrari its first podium of the season. Lewis Hamilton, winner of the previous race managed fourth ahead of Nico Rosberg who started from third place. It was a rather difficult race for the Mercedes GP driver, as he failed to bring forward his qualifying performance into the race. Teammate Michael Schumacher only managed a miserable 12th, after suffering from a broken wing earlier in the race. Jenson Button crossed the line in sixth, followed by Nick Heidfeld, Vitaly Petrov, Sebastien Buemi and finally Kamui Kobayashi who makes up the top ten. Malaysia’s Team Lotus only managed 18th and 19th, ahead of … [Read more...] about Red Bull 1-2 in Turkey as Vettel turns pole into victory
Lewis Hamilton has won the Chinese GP, preventing Sebastian Vettel from scoring a hat trick of wins. The reigning World Champion finished second ahead of teammate Mark Webber, who drove an amazing race from P18 to a podium spot. The Aussie deserves more than a pat on the back for his battling display which saw him make successful moves on the front runners late in the race – he’s our driver of the day! Jenson Button finished fourth for McLaren, ahead of Nico Rosberg (Mercedes GP Petronas) and the Ferraris of Massa and Alonso. The rest of the points scoring positions were filled by Michael Schumacher, Vitaly Petrov (Lotus Renault) and Kamui Kobayashi for Sauber. At the tail end, Team Lotus’ Kovalainen finished 16th and ahead of the Sauber of Sergio Perez and the Williams of Pastor Maldonado, but Perez had a drive through penalty for a collision with Adrian Sutil. Behind them was Trulli, who was ahead of the Virgins and HRTs. There was only one retirement – Jaime … [Read more...] about Hamilton wins action packed Chinese GP ahead of Red Bulls, brilliant drive from Webber – 18th to the podium!
It may be two wins out of two races for Sebastian Vettel, giving Red Bull a good early lead in the Constructors’ championship, but things are not 100% perfect at Red Bull. We know that they didn’t use KERS in Australia, and although they tried to incorporate the power boost in Malaysia, Mark Webber didn’t get to use it at all in Sepang, while winner Vettel was told on the radio midway into the race that he should stop using KERS. Interestingly, the World Champion went on to set a fastest lap once he heard that news, as if to show that he and the RB7 didn’t need any help. “With Mark we had a problem off the line that meant he could not use it at all, during the race, including the start. He had a problem on the lap to the startline. It was a fresh problem, not a problem we have had before. With Seb, we had a problem that meant we could have continued to run it, but from a safety point of view we thought it best to turn it off and not take any … [Read more...] about Adrian Newey: Red Bull struggling to get KERS working
Infiniti is coming to Malaysia – the company announced today that it plans to introduce its range of vehicles here in the fourth quarter of 2011. The announcement of the marque’s Malaysian introduction follows on the launch of the brand in Indonesia. In the last couple of months, it has also announced Mexico, Australia and Singapore as forthcoming markets. By 2013, Infiniti will have entered 25 new markets worldwide. Plans are afoot to open an Infiniti Centre, which will be strategically located in Kuala Lumpur, within the year. The centre will be operated by Inspired Motor, a joint venture between Edaran Tan Chong Motor and Auto Dunia. Inspired Motor will be responsible for the retailing of Infiniti vehicles, while Auto Dunia is the franchise holder. “As part of our worldwide expansion, we are very excited to launch Infiniti in Malaysia and welcome newly established joint venture Inspired Motor to our luxury brand fold,” said Toru Saito, Infiniti’s … [Read more...] about Infiniti confirmed for Malaysia – launching in 4th quarter
Sebastian Vettel may have won the season opening Australian GP without using KERS, but the temporary power boost isn’t as vital in Albert Park as it is in our Sepang International Circuit, which has long two straights. With this in mind, Red Bull Racing will use KERS at the Malaysian GP next weekend. “We plan to have it on the car for Malaysia. The KERS effect here (Australia) is less, as the run to the first corner is shorter. So that is our main exposure, which is why we didn’t want you guys to tell the rest of the world that we didn’t have it. In Malaysia there is a relatively long run to the first turn, and we will be keen to get it on the car as soon as possible,” team boss Christian Horner told Autosport. It has been revealed that KERS was disengaged from the RB7s of Vettel and Mark Webber because of reliability worries. This wasn’t widely known at the start because Red Bull wanted to hide the fact from the opposition. “We tested it, we … [Read more...] about Red Bull Racing to deploy KERS on long Sepang straights
Yup, the Petronas F1 Malaysian GP is up next on the cards on April 8-10, and you can be sure there’ll be plenty of related activities as the days count down. One such noisemaker is the Red Bull Speed Street event happening this coming weekend, right in the heart of the city. Former Red Bull Racing F1 driver David Coulthard will entertain the shopping crowd on April 3 with a driving demonstration of a F1 car along the famous thoroughfare of Jalan Bukit Bintang, in this case along a 500 metre stretch starting from The Westin hotel and Pavillion to the Jalan Sultan Ismail junction after Lot 10. The public can expect manoeuvres such as short sprints, burnouts and donuts during the almost hour-long event, the stuff that doesn’t happen (by intent, anyway) in an actual F1 race. It’s the first time that Austrian energy drink company Red Bull is organising a F1 show car event in Malaysia, and the event also marks the launch of the blue and silver Red Bull in Malaysia, … [Read more...] about Bull run! – Red Bull F1 car to be seen on Jln Bukit Bintang
Just about a week ago we released a full feature video that centers around interviews with key Team Lotus personnel including the drivers and Mike Gascoyne. We understand that the video was a little too long, hence we have come up with transcripts for all three interviews. This is the transcript of our interview with the team’s Chief Technical Officer, Mike Gascoyne. Transcripts of Jarno Trulli’s and Heikki Kovalainen’s interviews will be up shortly. HARVINDER: What do you have to say about Lotus Racing’s first rookie year in Formula 1? MIKE GASCOYNE: I think the first message is sort of job well done. Getting the entry so late coming into Formula 1, with only five months to set up a Formula 1 team from nothing, I think, is pretty unprecedented in modern Formula 1. And I think for all the new teams in Formula 1, you were never going to come in with such short notice and start racing and beating the established teams, it was impossible, so I think 2010 was about … [Read more...] about Transcript of interview with Team Lotus Mike Gascoyne
It started of quite dull, but the Turkish GP saved up all the drama for the later part of the race, and the most memorable scene from Istanbul was of the two leading Red Bulls clashing into each other. The team has now confirmed that race leader Mark Webber was driving in fuel-save mode when teammate Sebastian Vettel made a move on him on lap 40. The Aussie, who was heading for his third win in a row, turned down engine revs to ease to the finish line, but his young teammate had one more lap of full power to use before he also had to go into fuel-save mode. This means that on that particular lap, it was Vettel’s best chance to get past his teammate to snatch the lead. “He had managed to save an extra kilogramme of fuel – as both cars start the race with the same amount of fuel. Effectively he had one more lap of the optimum engine mode, but we couldn’t back him off because he was under pressure from Lewis Hamilton behind,” team boss Christian Horner … [Read more...] about Red Bull 1-2 collision: Webber was in fuel-save mode
Red Bull is showing its dominance in Formula 1 this season with its front row start for tomorrow’s Chinese GP. Fresh from a 1-2 victory in Malaysia a fortnight ago the team’s 1-2 qualifying finish was led by Sebastian Vettel closely followed by his teammate Mark Webber. It looked as though Webber sealed pole position but at the dying minutes of the final session his German teammate crossed the finish line about 0.3 seconds quicker. Many expected a McLaren to be on top after Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton dominated the practice sessions on Friday but both British drivers settled for fifth and sixth respectively. Both the Red Bulls will be joined by Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in third place. Mercedes GP’s Nico Rosberg who finished the previous race in the podium will start from fourth. Drivers championship leader Felipe Massa of Ferrari managed seventh after making a mistake at the final corner on his last lap ahead of Renault’s Robert Kubica and … [Read more...] about Red Bull to start 2010 Chinese GP from the front row!
Today is a very good day for Red Bull as the Renault-powered team scored a 1-2 victory at the surprisingly dry Malaysian GP. The 1-2 victory was led by Sebastian Vettel who started the race from third spot on the grid. Pole sitter and teammate Mark Webber crossed the line in second after losing the lead at the first turn on Lap 1. The duo were at a league of their own through out the entire race and the final podium position went to Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg awarding the team it’s first podium finish after starting from second place. Podium finisher at the Australian GP a week ago, Robert Kubica from Renault managed fourth place. Force India has done it again with Adrian Sutil’s fifth place. Hamilton made excellent progress through out the race as the Brit started from 20th position. Seventh place went to Felipe Massa who was the only Ferrari to cross the finish line. Massa is now leading the Driver’s Championship with 39 points ahead of Vettel and Alonso. … [Read more...] about Sebastian Vettel finally does it and wins in Malaysia!

Isuzu Malaysia has launched its facelifted D-Max line-up, which now comes in three double-cab trim levels – Standard, Premium and a new range-topping Z-Prestige – spread across eight variants in total. Visual changes start at the front, where you’ll find an entirely new fascia with projector headlamps, LED daytime running lights and fog lamps. Meanwhile at the rear, there’s a new tailgate panel design, with reverse sensors and reverse camera being standard across the range. Engine options remain as before, starting with the 4JK1-TCX 2.5 litre turbodiesel, which develops 136 PS at 3,600 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at 1,800 to 2,800 rpm. The 4JJ1-TCX 3.0 litre turbodiesel also returns here, providing 177 PS at 3,600 rpm and 380 Nm at 1,800 to 2,800 rpm. Therefore, we don’t get the new RZ4E-TC 1.9 litre Ddi Blue Power turbodiesel engine as seen on the Thai-spec D-Max, which outputs 150 hp at 3,600 rpm and 350 Nm of torque between 1,800 and 2,600.
