Smart cities week 2017
electric vehicle is set to make its debut at CES 2017 in Las Vegas this week. As we know for now is that this little EV is called the Eli ZERO and it looks a lot like a mash-up of a Smart Fortwo and a Renault Twizy. The company says it is, "reimagining the future of urban mobility to create the world you want to live in," which sure sounds like some sort of car sharing project to us.Actually, there's a little bit more. An email from the company says, "We believe Eli introduces an advanced, yet simple product that will fundamentally shift how we engage with urban fabrics. Smaller, simpler and friendlier, Eli ZERO is the ultimate two seater mobility device for agile daily movement. Eli ZERO reimagines the NEV and addresses the dynamic transportation demands of modern cities and towns by offering a versatile driving solution for both urban and suburban neighborhoods." Read into that what you will, and we'll see what we can find when we're at CES. … [Read more...] about Eli Zero is the electric Smart Fortwo-Renault Twizy mashup you’ve been craving
► Mazda Vision Coupe► Sleek new two-door► Revealed at Tokyo 2017 Mazda rolled out its latest concept – the Vision Coupe – at a preview night before the Tokyo motor show proper, to express its current design thinking (spoiler alert: it’s elegant, arty and subtle). The threat of a typhoon taking out Tokyo city changed Mazda’s original plan to show the Vision Coupe on Monday night in Tokyo’s lofty National Museum alongside rare, hand-crafted Japanese artefacts – to send out its repeated message that cars can be elevated to the level of art if executed properly – but that didn’t stop the plucky Japanese marque finding another spot within 24 hours.A friendly Tokyo Mazda dealership whose interior the brand’s design team had helped transform previously became the hastily re-arranged new venue, but this left the car – and its design alone – to remain the star.Unlike many Japanese brands who barely … [Read more...] about Mazda goes subtle with Vision Coupe at Tokyo 2017
Along with minor styling updates and newly available features, the 2017 Mazda 3 also is getting a reshuffling of trim levels. Both sedan and hatchback body styles; the same 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter engines; and Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trims all remain available. However, Mazda has decided to get rid of the somewhat confusing “i” and “s” designations that used to differentiate between the engine choices. So, rather than getting into the nitty-gritty of comparing 2016 and 2017 trim levels, it’s much simpler to look at the 2017 lineup from a fresh perspective. At the bottom of the price ladder sits the 2017 Mazda 3 Sport sedan with a 155-hp 2.0-liter engine and standard six-speed manual transmission. It starts at the same $18,680 as last year. The Sport hatchback is $1250 extra, and a six-speed automatic transmission is $1050 extra regardless of body style. For Sport sedans, there’s an available $1000 Preferred … [Read more...] about No More i or s: 2017 Mazda 3 Reshuffles Trim Levels, Starts at $18,680
North American Smart consumers may be subject exclusively to Electric Drive come 2018, but the chic city-car brand is continuing to flesh out its gasoline-powered models for the rest of the world’s markets. To that end, Smart is unveiling two new special-edition models at the Geneva auto show next week.New to the four-seat, four-door Smart Forfour model line is the Crosstown Edition, which sets itself apart via trim-specific side skirts and bumper covers that sport faux skid plates. Additionally, the model is lowered by 0.4 inch and rides on black-painted 16-inch wheels. Power comes from Smart’s familiar 89-hp turbocharged 0.9-liter three-cylinder engine tied to a five-speed manual transmission.Since the Forfour was never sold here, the Crosstown Edition is perhaps of less significance than the Smart Fortwo Brabus Edition #2 cabrio, a special variant of the droptop Smart. The sequel to the Smart Fortwo Edition #1 coupe, the Edition #2 is fitted with 16-inch … [Read more...] about Smart Crosstown and Brabus Special Editions Not Special Enough for U.S.

Is it or isn’t it? A crossover, I mean. That’s been the discussion over the 2017 Kia Niro ever since it bowed. No one seems to care whether the all-new hybrid functions as it should. Instead, the argument revolves around dimensions, and everyone knows that no one wins when someone whips out a ruler.A couple of weeks ago, Corey took one glance at a photo I shared with the TTAC staff comparing the Niro to my mother’s 2014 Corolla. The photo showed the rather insignificant difference in overall height between the two compact vehicles, and … [Read more...] about 2017 Kia Niro EX Review – Don’t Call It a Hatchback

It was my shooter, Myle, who picked up the Chevrolet Bolt press car we had for the week. I was too busy getting my ass massaged in a Lincoln Continental in the meantime. Besides, Myle owns a house, and I live in a crummy apartment, so it made more sense for him to park his all-electric Bolt EV at the house for charging. It turned out to be a very bad idea, as he lives in the middle of a cornfield in Saint-Hyacinthe, Québec. His house was built over 60 years ago, so his electrical system couldn’t keep up with the modern tech this electric car is fitted with. “Dude, it takes 20 hours to charge, how the hell will I get to work tomorrow?” he barked at me angrily over the phone. Meanwhile, I was enjoying the overabundance of freedom provided by my V6-powered, gasoline-fed, American luxury barge.Welcome to the realities of electric propulsion in its early years. Range!Thankfully, one thing the Chevrolet Bolt has a lot of is battery range. A full charge will get … [Read more...] about 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Review – Aspiring to Normal Car Status

In a category little more than half the size now than it was a decade ago and with an ever-shrinking number of competitors, the dawn of a truly new people-carrying, grocery-getting, pickup-truck-aping van has the potential to upset the apple cart. Two years ago, the Kia Sedona shook things up. Although the Sedona remains a relatively small player, Kia’s share of the minivan market is nearly seven times stronger now than it was two … [Read more...] about 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Limited Review – Is This the Best Minivan You Can Buy?
