INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — He rode through Gasoline Alley on a skateboard. Yeah, him. Meet the new one-off Verizon IndyCar Series driver, Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula 1 world champion already doing things differently at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Officially, Alonso completed 47 laps Monday on the first official day of practice for this month’s Indianapolis 500, finishing 19th on the speed chart among 32 drivers. His fastest lap was 223.025 mph, a half-second off the pace-setting 226.338 mph of Andretti Autosport teammate Marco Andretti’s lap. There’s obviously so much more to come for the Spaniard, so much to learn, so much to experience at this fabled oval track ahead of the 101st running of the race, on May 28. The pressure will build, certainly, which is why it was refreshing Monday to see Alonso clipping along on a skateboard with a big smile on his face. “Five hours on the plane,” he said of the zzzzz time on the Sunday evening flight to … [Read more...] about Fernando Alonso Loving Indy 500 Experience
We don’t do boring.Yes, we’re impressed that the Acme BlahMiser Brougham sold 600,000 units last year, but if it doesn’t make our cerebellum sizzle when we drive it, if it doesn’t channel our passion for mechanical splendor, if it doesn’t make us a bit teary-eyed when we switch off the ignition, it’ll never be an Automobile All-Star. We’re aficionados, as attuned to the tugging of our hearts as we are to the musings of our minds. What’s more, like most of you we dream big; a couple of the winners pictured here climb pretty high into the price stratosphere. But, hey, just because we can’t afford a Jackson Pollock painting doesn’t mean we’re not going to celebrate its brilliance—and envy those who can hang one on their living room wall. Thus, our formula for this All-Stars shootout: We gathered up 25 of the … [Read more...] about 2016 AUTOMOBILE All-Stars: The Winners
FIA has decided it wants a slice of the pie and will be hosting its first Intercontinental Drifting Cup this fall in Daiba, Tokyo, Japan.Until now, D1 Grand Prix and Formula Drift have been the premier sanctioning bodies for drifting competitions. The FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile) organizes the Formula 1 World Championship, the World Rally Championship, and the World Endurance Championship. The move to host a drifting competition gives the sport a new level of legitimacy - and the FIA a new and younger audience it can capitalize on.There are some who still look down on drifting. It is an unusual form of motorsport, combining elements of sports like skateboarding and BMX biking. Events are judged on form and style rather than raw speed and lap times. That alone sets it apart from the FIA's other championships, but the organization has brought in some experienced leaders to help with things.Sunpros, the promoter that popularized D1 Grand Prix worldwide, has been … [Read more...] about FIA to host the first Intercontinental Drifting Cup in Japan
